I stayed at La Calcina Oct.7-11, 2005, in room 31 (up 3 flights of stairs). The room was spotless, charming decor, decent-sized for a single by European standards, and very light, with two windows opening on a side canal that also gave a view of the Giudecca canal and il Redentore. (I could watch large cruise ships sail in and out every day.) Bathroom also more than adequate and very clean. Breakfast (inside because of rain) was plentiful, the usual croissants, yogurt, fruit, cheese, coffee, tea, etc. Staff were always helpful and friendly. Ate one dinner at its canal-side restaurant, which has a special menu for guests at 22E. Food was good but service was slow--took more than 45 min. to get the first plate. While it was a pleasure to leave the the tourist throngs behind, it also took me 25-30 min. to walk to San Marco. The vaporetto, altho the stop was nearby, took about the same amount of time because of intervening stops. So the location is a trade-off: there were times I was happy to take the #82 vaporetto and avoid the crush on the grand canal and other times when I wished I were closer to San Marco. But the hotel itself and its staff were wonderful!
