I stayed at La Calcina Oct.7-11, 2005, in room 31 (up 3 flights of stairs). The room was spotless, charming decor, decent-sized for a single by European standards, and very light, with two windows opening on a side canal that also gave a view of the Giudecca canal and il Redentore. (I could watch large cruise ships sail in and out every day.) Bathroom also more than adequate and very clean. Breakfast (inside because of rain) was plentiful, the usual croissants, yogurt, fruit, cheese, coffee, tea, etc. Staff were always helpful and friendly. Ate one dinner at its canal-side restaurant, which has a special menu for guests at 22E. Food was good but service was slow--took more than 45 min. to get the first plate. While it was a pleasure to leave the the tourist throngs behind, it also took me 25-30 min. to walk to San Marco. The vaporetto, altho the stop was nearby, took about the same amount of time because of intervening stops. So the location is a trade-off: there were times I was happy to take the #82 vaporetto and avoid the crush on the grand canal and other times when I wished I were closer to San Marco. But the hotel itself and its staff were wonderful!

The location is great!
the staff was very helpfull, very nice.
I think it is a little overpriced, specially if they don't have room service.
The kitchen gets a little noisy early in the morning (our room was right above it).
But overall it was a great experience.

This was my second trip to Venice, but the first time staying in the Dosoduro area & the Pensione La Calcina. If I am ever lucky enough to return to Venice, there is no question that I will stay at La Calcina. Every single thing was perfect -- the rooms were clean and quaint. The staff were accomodating and friendly. The entire place has a charm and comfortableness to it that makes you feel right at home. I will tell everyone I know to stay in this place when going to Venice.

“Loved La Calcina”

We loved our stay at La Calcina. Located in quiet Dorsoduro, Venice.

The room was just right, comfortable bed, fresh sheets and fluffy pillows. Internet access was very good, as was the abundant buffet breakfast included with our stay. The staff was friendly as can be. We will surely be back and tell all of our friends to stay there.

My 22 year old daughter and I took a phenomenal (all self-planned) 3 week tour of Europe in August, and our first stop was Venice. We stayed at La Calcina-- and it was a perfect start for our trip. Away from the crush around the Grand Canal and San Marcos Plaza-- we were still within a 15 minute walk of all the major sites in Venice. The rooms had everything we needed-- were impeccably clean, very charming and at a great price. But the true charm lay with the gracious and friendly staff. Everyone-- from desk clerks, to wait staff to housekeeping was unfailingly kind and helpful. They gave us directions, arranged for transport-- even advice when I was having trouble with the ATM. The hotel has a waterside restaurant, which got us off to a great start every morning for breakfast. We had no trouble getting around to any site we wanted to see, and had the added benefit of a grocery store-- Venice style-- a 5 minute walk down from the hotel, so we could stock up on water and late night snacks. It was also very convenient to be able to have the water taxi pull up right to the front of our hotel-- so we did not have to drag suitcases down the street or across the plaza. We highly recommend La Calcina-- and wish you a wonderful stay in a truly unique city!
