We've just returned from a week in Venice to celebrate my 40th birthday, and stayed at the Pensione Accademia. The hotel is conveniently situated, just a couple of minutes walk from the Accademia vaporetto stop, and is in a nice location. Reading previous reviews of this hotel I thought it would be quiet at night but this proved not to be the case - although all the bars and restaurants shut early and there seemed to be nobody around as we were walking back to the hotel each evening, almost every night we were woken up at about 1pm by people shouting and screaming in the street below - don't know where they'd been until then as we couldn't find anywhere to go for a nightcap after our meal! Then, at about 6 in the morning, the canal beneath our window could come to life - very noisily!! It's a busy little canal, one of the major arterial links between the Grand Canal and the Guidecca Canal, and was used constantly by workboats, delivery boats, pleasure-boats etc.etc. - it just hadn't occurred to me that we would suffer from traffic noise! Our room, no.43, was quite large and comfortable and very very clean - the bathroom was small but adequate with a large shower and again was beautifully clean. We thought the breakfasts were very good - cereal, yoghurt and fresh fruit, rolls, croissants and cakes and good coffee. My husband likes a cooked breakfast and each day could have bacon or sausages and eggs. We found the staff to be friendly and cheerful and it would have been nice to have taken advantage of the garden at the rear of the hotel but was a little bit cold (mid-March) to do so. Recommendations to eat at the hotel's restaurant and a sales pitch for the Murano glass tour came immediately as we checked in, but weren't pushed again so that was OK. We took advantage of the free motorboat trip to the glass factory at Murano which was good, but found it difficult to get rid of the very persistent salesman who tried to sell us everything we paused to look at - in fact, I'm still expecting to see him hovering behind me now! When we made our excuses and left we weren't offered the free waterbus ticket back to the mainland as advertised, but definitely didn't want to go back again to collect it so just made our own way back. We didn't eat at the hotel's restaurant (only because we found plenty nearer to the hotel) so can't comment on it. Venice itself was lovely, a real experience, and lived up to everything we expected. The only disappointment was the amount of graffiti which was absolutely everywhere (probably that's what the noisy crowd outside the hotel were doing each evening!) and also the amount of dog poo - probably no more than in any other city, but because the alleyways are so small and crowded it makes it more difficult to avoid......! One thing that particularly pleased us - every restaurant, coffee bar or wine bar we entered had "No Smoking" signs and everyone obeyed. We would definitely go back to Venice and stay at the Pensione Accademia again, but would request a back room overlooking the garden next time as I'm sure it would be a lot quieter than the rooms facing the canal.
