We stayed at the Hotel Antico Doge in mid-November 2005, and found the accommodations reasonable for the price, and the staff extremely pleasant and helpful.

We stayed in the least expensive double room, 110 euros per night for a double bed and private bath with shower. Although small, the room was well-appointed, with a desk, mini bar and small closet in addition to the bed and bathroom, which was very nicely sized for an Italian hotel. The rate also included a standard breakfast of rolls, cheese and yogurt, along with coffee and tea.

The English speaking staff was very friendly, and offered to obtain tickets to local shows. (Do note that the opera tickets are for an opera "demonstration," and not an actual show.) The staff also arranged for a private water taxi, included in the price of the room, to visit Murano island.

Thanks to the directions included on the Web site, the hotel was very easy to find.

We had a junior suite overlooking the canal. LOTS of pedestrian traffic did not disturb us and added to the ambiance of a bustling Venice. All the many positive reviews of this hotel are justified, particularly the positives on the location. Ideal.
Two things to be aware of: (1) there is no lobby. The desk is it. (2) We were not offered assistance with our bags, the key was handed to us and we were on our own. But those are two nit-picks. Oh, any restaurant in the immediate area is a good one. Ask at the desk.
For a real dining treat try Da Fiore. The only Michelin starred restaurant in Venice. Worth every euro (expect 200 per couple, including wine)

The Hotel Antico Doge is a charming hotel, with pleasant staff and beautiful rooms. Our stay in October 2005 was enjoyable enough, except for one minor detail. We had the suite room that had a quaint balcony overlooking a canal and square.I loved the room...I did not like the noise. I realize that most rooms in Venice have street noise, but this room was directly above the 'freeway'in Venice. What I mean is that there are two main walkways that take you from one side of the city to the other that most locals and tourists use to 'commute' (they walk). Our room was just above a seemingly endless, constant throng of people from very early to late. I loved the view of the canal,the fabric covered walls,the jelly filled croissants, but in all the reviews I read on this site no one ever mentioned the 'freeway' under the front rooms. We used ear plugs and extra pillows and did just fine. Otherwise, a great time in Venice!

We stayed in the superior room which was very pretty, spotless and quiet.
The shower was powerful and the continental breakfast better than most.

There was no view from our window (which was to be expected because of its location) so would be no good for those that which to spend time gazing out on to a view.

The staff were helpful. I would suggest small amounts of luggage (one bag each) as there is nowhere for the hotel to keep it once you have checked out. Its really not a problem if you have wheels.

To be avoided at all costs is a bar called Al Theatro which adds on service charge and cover charges and the service is miserable.
