“Great attentive service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

We have been to Venice and stayed at two other hotels. This time, for Carnivale, we chose this hotel. What really sets this place in a category of it's own is the service. The staff took the time to want to know you and likewise you wanted to know them. Sure it is a historic building with retrofits for the modern age. When we go back we will stay at this hotel. By the way, I did not see any palm trees (I.e. Picture).?

Room Tip: Get a room on second floor or first floor that faces the canal.

We had been looking forward to our third visit to Room 108 even before we turned on PBS last week and saw our room, Matteo, and the breakfast terrace on the latest Rick Steves Venice show. So, like planetwalking below, I was disappointed to find the Rialto Bridge view blocked by the construction next door. Noise is not a problem, but the obstructed view will last into April 2013. Matteo was totally understanding, and sent us to look at several other hotels with wonderful views (and higher prices).

But we stayed, because in the end, this is still the best hotel room in Venice. Even without the Rialto Bridge, the view in the other direction, straight down the Grand Canal toward Ferrovia (see photos), is the best show in town. You can sit for hours and watch the water traffic go by. Gondolas pass five meters in front of you. The tourists on the number 1 vaporetto take your picture and you feel like a local. Other hotels may have nice views, usually through small or high windows, but there is nothing like this 12 foot wide wall of windows that go down almost to water level and open to let in fresh air and the lapping sound of the waves.

When we walked over by San Marco, we stopped by the sister property, Locanda Orseolo, to use the rest room, Alex offered us complimentary tea and cappuccino, which arrived with little pastries. Next to the laundry bag in the room there is no inflated price list, because if the staff is available they will do it for free. Such warm hospitality and consideration from Matteo, Barbara and their people makes each return to Venice like coming home.

I can’t dispute some of planetwalking’s other comments. This is a boutique hotel in a building that, 500 years ago, was not designed as a hotel. It could use some touching up. You can stay in one of the big hotels near San Marco and get better towels. But you won’t find gondolieri eating in the restaurants they send you to, like we did at lunch today. You won’t be welcomed like a long-lost member of the family.

And you won’t have the best window in Venice.

We stayed at the Al Ponte Antico in March 2013 for two nights.

Before our visit I’d contacted the hotel and asked for confirmation of what was the best room to see the Rialto Bridge in all its splendour, helpfully and I guess somewhat expectantly, the hotel had said it was their suite - Room 108. They were right but what welcomed us when we arrived was just about as far from a perfect view as you can ever expect (please see picture...). In fairness this was not the hotel’s fault as it was a municipal building next door that had erected the monstrosity; however the fact that there was no offer of explanation or apology (or heaven forbid price reduction - which only after asking for we were given) was very disappointing and extremely poor for the top dollar room rate.

The suite was just about acceptable but not at all great. Looking back I am left wondering why other reviews do not see what to me sticks out like a sore thumb about the hotel. As a picture paints all the words I’ve attached a few photos to make my point and balance a little from the ‘best hotel in Venice’ et al Tripadvisor backdrop.

Issues to me included the large pile of office chairs and discarded oddments in the corner of the corridor close to our suite and in full view, large chips out of the ‘period’ furniture, a stained modern 1980’s style sofa in the 'period' suite, the bedding which is clean but a long way from comfortable with its woollen sheets, uncomfortable pillows and no mattress topper/protector. An old dirty electrical wire hanging down from the ceiling with nowhere to go adds to the unhappiness as does the old very small, dated ‘don’t look too close’ bathroom ... and sadly much more more besides.

All the above may seem harsh but it needs to be said, I can only feel that with the hotel flying high on the Tripadvisor reviews it has lost sight of what was perhaps once much better. Another reviewer suggests that in order to not cause offence to the hotel staff people don’t feel they can look behind the helpful smiles to post an honest critique which may just be true.

The good bits include the position of the hotel, the view of the Grand Canal and the aforementioned very happy to help staff. Venice, which is of course what the visit is all about, is something special and a must seen. We also enjoyed a night at the Jazz Club which is a little basic on amenities but the music was fine and great value for money.

There is not much in the way of a bar scene near the hotel but plenty of restaurants with varying prices depending on how close you were to the tourist attractions. Murano is worth a visit for the world famous glass. Jumping on and off the water buses is also a cheap way to travel once the feet start to ache (which trust me they will!).

Would we stay at the Al Ponte Antico hotel again? With a heavy heart, no, sadly not, would I recommend it - again no. It promised much but delivered something that was simply ordinary and to be frank shabby in parts. Three star perhaps but never four star. For the money there must be better hotels in this beautiful city.

So Mr, Mrs or Ms Tripadvisor don’t you see what I see.....?

Everything the previous reviewers have written about this hotel is true: it is the most perfect place to stay in Venice. Its location is magical as it's on the Grand Canal, (I watched the vaporetti whist eating breakfast) and it is yards from the Rialto. The building is a beautifully restored 15th century palazzo. The staff are incredible and cannot do enough to make one welcome: the friendliness of the atmosphere is unique in my experience. It was like staying amongst friends.
For anyone wanting a real Venetian experience, this is definitely the place, and now that we have found it, we shall certainly return. Congratulations to Matteo and his staff for making our stay so memorable. To be able to finish a heavy day's sightseeing with a capuccino in the sunshine on the hotel's terrace watching the world in the gondole going by on the Grand Canal is a privilege.

We recently stayed for six nights at the hotel. Everything worked out as described by Tripadvisor: smooth transport by watertaxi (pricey, but what isn't in Venice?), wonderful first impressions on arrival, as our luggage was whisked to our room. From then onwards everything went like a dream: a nice breakfast with eggs cooked to my specifications, restaurants booked, all our cares looked after in the nicest and politest possible manner. On my wife's birthday a bunch of beautiful flowers was organized; and a bottle of prosecco, together with rose petals and a card, materialized! And everyone congratulated my wife. In the course of forty years' travelling, one of our best hotel experiences. Impeccable standards of excellence.

We stayed at ponte antico during carnival 2013 and had the best experiences we've ever had at a hotel. The hotel is so beautifully decorated. The rooms are big and decorated beautifully too. The staff is so friendly and helpful which is a reflection from the amazing owner Matteo that gave us a tour of the hotel the second we arrived. The location is perfect, right in the middle of everything and the views are great of the Rialto bridge and grand canal. In the morning breakfast is amazingly prepared fresh for you with a huge selection of what you can eat. I would recommend this hotel to everyone I know. Thanks again Matteo for making our venice stay unforgettable.

I agree wholeheartedly with all the reviews of al Ponte Antico posted here: this is a beautiful boutique hotel; the rooms and bathrooms are spectacular; the sitting areas are calm and serene; the overall design and architectural feel, superb. The staff members are charming, professsional.

I will never forget the time that we spent there
This hotel is excellent.
