“Monastery Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013 via mobile

Great location, on the first side street next to the St Lucia station. You have to carry/pull your case from the station to your Hotel in Venice as there are no taxis, only boats. You can get a water bus or taxi to take you to other areas, but the case pulling still applies. In the summer heat (36C), you don't want to be struggling through the crowds with your cases.
It's a former monastery so the rooms are on the small side, but nicely decorated in an old fashioned Venetian style which adds to the atmosphere of the hotel. The bathrooms are fine, with a decent shower and proper towels (Italian towels can be like cotton sheets).
The former refectory is a now a tasteful lounge, with well priced drinks, €4 for a Bombay G&T is amazing value for Venice, where a plastic bottle of water can cost €2 or more.
Breakfast was good enough, served in the dining room or in the garden.
A good choice for Venice, atmospheric, comfortable and reasonably priced.

Unlike some of the other reviewers we had a relatively small room...but very adequate with a great shower. The location is superb - both from the standpoint of convenience if you are arriving by train or bus and in terms of the proximity to the less traveled parts of Venezia such as the Ghetto (an amazing area with a fascinating museum). The breakfasts are sumptuous and you can enjoy them in a lovely courtyard. The hotel...and especially the the large room that was the refectory (sp)....is steeped in history and has the charm and tradition that you look for in a special place.

But the staff is far and away the best reason to stay at this hotel. Fabio, Matteo and the others are personable, very funny, incredibly knowledgeable and as accommodating as people can be.... They told us that they love what they do and it shows.... They spent 15 minutes showing us how to get to our next location....Selva D' Val Gardena...and were always willing to help in any way possible. They are...individually and collectively the best hotel staff we have ever dealt with...and they made the stay a very memorable one....

The only caveat...the church bells do ring at 7:25...so don't stay out too late

It is a very nice hotel. Location very good, staff very kind. It has a nice small garden where we can have breakfast. Breakfast was nice and tasty, different kind of bread, the rooms are modest but comfortable. i would recommend this hotel

We flew into Venice and took a boat from the airport to this hotel (this required a short and interesting walk over a canal bridge from the boat landing). We had requested early check-in and they were ready for us. The hotel used to be an 1800's abbey and it seemed that the peace and quiet from those years still permeated the halls. Our room was cool, dark and clean, the location made it easy to explore the city by foot or boat, and it's close to the departure area for both the trains and buses. Best of all, it was sooooooooo quiet! We got a great night's sleep and an excellent breakfast the next morning to keep us going.

Very good location. Comfortable room and lovely, charming courtyard. Staff was friendly and accomodating as w were a group on business. the room was cool in the heat, and felt very serene in busy venice. The only think is that the breakfast could be better, the eggs were green and the kiwis too hard to eat - every day.

We stayed here for one night in July and wished we had stayed longer. Our triple room and bathroom was huge with padded walls in the main room so we didn't hear any neighbors. Our triple room had a small table with chairs, a dressing table and a big, comfortable queen bed with one large single bed. It was air conditioned which is needed in Summer. There is a bar fridge in the walk in robe. There is plenty of fresh food for breakfast and you have the choice of sitting inside or outside in their lovely garden. The staff are friendly and very professional and speak English. There is no lift but they have staff who will carry your suitcases for you which is a bonus. The hotel is situated near the station, but amazingly you don't hear the station noise as it's in a very quiet area. It has a large sitting room for all guests and the wi-fi is free. Hotel Abbazia is in a great location and very convenient as it's a quick 2 minute walk to the station. By the way there is a ramp for you and your suitcases on the left side of the train station as soon as you hop off the train. We missed it the first time. Also Venice has a lot of bridges with stairs so another convenience as there are no bridges in between the hotel and the train station. If you arrive by train take the first left alley way in between restaurants and Hotel Abbazia is approximately 50 meters up on your left. We will be back one day and I have no doubt we will stay in Hotel Abbazia again.

Room Tip: It has triple rooms which is a big bonus.
