“Better than average but not very good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

When we arrived, the hotel receptionist made some confusion about the reserve! We had to call our agency in Portugal to help us, since the person was convicted that our reserve had been cancelled! Only after some insistence, the man realized that it was wrong.
Ignoring that issue and regarding the stay, it was ok, room was clean, location was very good (between train and bus stations) and breakfast was normal for this kind of hotels.

This gorgeous little hotel, although a little lane away from the grand canal, is walking distance to some lovely restaurants and extremely close to the water bus and taxis!
Staff.......wonderful, and the lovely lady at breakfast service deserves a pay rise!! :-)
It is a short distance from the little taxi station(obviously on water), so you may want to make sure that your transfer will help you.
Overall.....we had a lovely experience. We were first floor with a little balcony over the courtyard!

Room Tip: If you can, ask for a balcony. Although very small, they give you some feeling of the local culture...

Firstly, we stayed in this hotel (and Venice) for 6x days/5x nights.... with approx 50% of visitors to Venice not even staying 24hrs and the majority of the remainder staying in the city for less than 72hrs, we were well placed to make the following observations.

Firstly, the hotel is situated on the corner of two intersecting pedestrian routes (Corte Case Nuove, and Calle Begamaschi S. Croce), approximately 150m away from the busy Grand Canal which lies to the North. With no bars or resturants in the immediate vicinity, the evenings are quiet and untroubled by rowdy tourist/locals.

All the staff we interacted with were helpful and pleasant, even when faced with downright rude and obnoxious guests (we encountered a few - in particular a large group of Indian 'businessmen' almost had me jumping to the defence of the breakfast staff).

With no 'in-house' resturant or bar, the Carlton Capri was a comfortable place to have breakfast and sleep, but not the best venue if you wanted to use the hotel as a base from which to plan and venture out to the sights and attractions of Venice. There is a degree of shared resource with the sister hotel (the much larger Carlton Hotel on the Grand Canal), for example you can get discount by prebooking meals in the featured "La Cupola" restaurant.

With regard to some of negatives mentioned by previous reviewers, I can confirm that due to the evening heat, I slept more than one night naked on top of the bed covers and did not suffer one bite (mosquitto or any type of other insect ;)

Breakfast was (for an Italian hotel) quite good, but after the 4th day the standard fare of bacon, scambled eggs, bread rolls, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereal etc, started to get boring. For the vast majority of guests this lack of change would not be a problem, but for anyone staying more that a couple of days.....

I must mention the scrambled eggs.... never have I seen cooked eggs as orange as these!, I am not sure that the colour was as a result of the eggs having come from 'free-range' hens or the scramble originating from a packet ;) Suffice to say they tasted okay and even after 5+ days eating them we did not suffer any ill effect, so once you get over the unusual colour, enjoy :)

Being a coffee fiend, I must say the freshly ground coffee served with breakfast was rather good and the caffine hit certainly lasted until lunch time!

Would I recommend this hotel?.... if your requirements are the same as mine, .....good price for honest and acceptable 3* accomodation, located very close to Piazzale Roma and the Vaporetto then yes... it gets my vote. If however you are after a bargin hotel expecting 4* luxury for 3* money... think again.

Room Tip: If you want strong WiFi signal in the room try and choose a 1st/2nd floor. Very few of the rooms h...

For a 3 star this is an above average hotel. Very clean, and with nice staff. The room is not too spacious, but we dind't spend much time there. Great location, near the vaporetto, the train station. You can walk everywhere. In a few minutes you're in one of the touristic sites, monuments, etc. Highly recommend. The breakfast is the only "minus", it could have more variety and quantity. If you go to Venice, and don't want to stay much in your room, this is a perfect place to stay.

Clean hotel with helpful service and close convenient location smack in the heart of Venice. 15 minute walk to San Marco Square and only five minutes to the Rialto Bridge etc. easy to find and great value for money.

Had no problems and highly recommended. Cheers.

I found this hotel very quaint and charming. Our room was rather small for 2 people, more of a size of one., It's about the size of a cruise cabin with no window. but we weren't in the room long. Great location, great service at the front desk, rooms could have been cleaner but OK. Breakfast was the best we had found during our entire stay through Rome and Florence, This buffet served scrambled eggs and bacon. No where else did you find this. Pack lightly. If I can travel to Italy for 9 days in a carry on, you can too. If you're taking the train, there is a bridge you have to cross. It's 30 stairs up and 30 stairs down. If you have a lot of luggage, the short trip can be unbearable. You can also use the amenities of the Grand Carlton Capri right on the canal, like drink discounts. I say yes to this hotel

Room Tip: Don't go by pictures, they are deceiving on size. Typically European rooms are small.

The rooms in the pictures we had viewed on internet all looked bigger and brighter than what we actually got. The bed was not very comfortable. Having said that the room was very clean and quiet and the service offered was very good.
The food (breakfast) was delicious and nutritious.
The Hotel is in an excellent location.
