“Meet Oscar Wilde.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

A nice place with lush fin de siecle decoration, where you could meet Oscar Wilde sipping his absinthe - if he was still living. The bathrooms are clean and inviting. The only problem of the place is, that it is close to a busy boat pier, where day tourists debark in the morning. You should avoid the rooms with lagoon view if you want to sleep with open window. Go to Gritti Palace if you want lagoon plus silence. The room prices are hefty - be sure you raise your credit card limit when you have a longer stay. Otherwise you will be washing dishes in the kitchen for a couple of years.

Room Tip: If you want to indulge yourself order some chocolates for your arrival.

Caveat: This stay was in October 2007. We did not have your run of the mill experience at this hotel, so it is possible our rating might be artificially inflated... but an experience is an experience. We had a tremendously spacious room considering the architecture, but it the first few days of our honeymoon (as we worked our way down to Capri) and asked for a complementary upgrade. It was the end of their tourist season (last week in October), and the hotel wasn't full. The decor was beautiful, and the location could not be better. We finished our stay with a 16 course meal in their MET Restaurant, putting our experience over-the-top. I could write a book on the colors, antiques, the bars, the courtyard, but I won't. I'll just say that if you are looking for a romantic stay, this is the place. Whether you think Venice is romantic or just touristy is another argument, but at least when you get away to your hotel, you feel like you are on your honeymoon.

Venice is such a special place to us, and we yearned to return. We had no idea what crowds we would experience from the cruise ships passing through. It would take more than crowds to ruin Venice for us. We simply enjoyed less-traveled parts of Venice during the day, and enjoyed the Piazza San Marco and other busier areas later when the crowds lessened. The Metropole Hotel met all of our expectations, with a beautiful, large room which was surprisingly quiet. The staff was fantastic, and helped with all arrangements, from the water taxi into and out of the hotel (very worth it, by the way), to directions and recommendations and reservations to restaurants. We loved the cozy bar, where we enjoyed am amazing martini and bellini at the end of our day, as well as a late, lazy breakfast offered for the stragglers. It was really a wonderful stay, and we will once again yearn to return.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room with a view, but if it is not available don't be disappointed. The qu...

Metropole is in the best location for arrival via taxi, walking to St Mark's square, vaporetto, shopping,Rialto bridge and most all of Venice to Roma. The rooms were comfortable, bathroom were remodeled, nice size. The service was excellent. I would highly recommend the package with the breakfast included. Directly outside the hotel is benches that many people sit on for hours eating gelato from the store on the corner and "people watching " . This area was the only public area that one could sit without purchasing food. The down side is the cost for a 5 star hotel that only meets a 4 star rating. The decor is very Venetian eclectic . Overall , I would definitely stay there again ! It is an excellent choice of accommodations .

Room Tip: Buy the breakfast package

I only stayed at this hotel for 2 days before I went on a cruise. The hotel is perfectly situated in Venice. Right on the canals so you are able to get a water taxi right to the hotel. It has it's own dock which was great. You can also catch the public water taxi from the airport. One of their stops is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel itself was very nice. Quite an old classic Italian hotel but kept well. The rooms were a good size for 2 people. Not huge but no means too small. The beds were extremely comfortable. Nice firm mattress. The room had plenty of storage, a aircon system that worked well & a good sized bathroom. It has a nice hotel bar which we used a few times. The staff were all very helpful. The only problem we had was when they held our luggage after we checked out it doesn't get locked away rather just left near reception. My friend had his iPad stolen from his luggage. In the end it was a nice hotel to stay in.

Room Tip: A room away from the front so you don't get the noise from the promenade.

Yes, the decor is over the top, to put it mildly. But we had no problems with service, in fact we found the staff very helpful and welcoming. I agree that breakfast should be included at these prices, but we opted for the 10 euro mini breakfast which included coffee of your choice, juice and good croissants and was served in the well-lit bar.
Our room was large with a spacious marble bathroom. The extravagantly carved bed was huge and comfortable.
The hotel offers a "free" trip by water taxi to Murano. Unless you are seriously interested in purchasing a chandelier or art glass do not get roped in to what is essentially a come-on. Once on the island of Murano you are taken to one glass factory, given a demonstration, and then a tour of room after room of expensive glass. At no time are you unaccompanied. This trip left us feeling uncomfortable and annoyed with the hotel for what seemed to be a set-up.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked one of the small canals. It was a bit dark but certainly quiet at night with th...

My husband took me here as a 50th birthday surprise. Well what can I say but excellent. Our room was large, comfortable and clean ( no mosquitos). The staff were attentive and polite. The breakfast was good and the restaurant excellent (pricey but worth it). The bar staff were welcoming especially Bruno who made you feel he had known you all his life. If I ever go back to Venice I would definitely stay there again and would highly recommend it.
