“Does what is says on the tin.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

This is a four-star hotel, no ifs, no buts. It is clean, stylish, conveniently positioned and the service is charming and helpful. It is packed to the gunnels with antiques of various shapes and sizes but, as someone who is actually in this trade, I am always sceptical as to the actual beauty of mountains of low quality items, whatever their age. That said, our suite was very nice, the shell-shaped bath with its Youth Hostel shower attachment excluded, and we were very well looked after. The owner deserves a special commendation for his exceptional English and easy manner whilst his staff were charming and helpful. Recommended.

Room Tip: The canal rooms, as opposed to the lagoon rooms, are much quieter.

My fiance and I stayed here the night that he proposed to me and absolutely every element of our trip was fantastic. The suite we had was beautiful, the food for breakfast was delicious, the Oriental Bar was amazing, and the staff were the most helpful, friendly, and genuine people I have ever met. I would recommend this to everyone!

Arrived in style with a private water taxi from the airport taking us to the hotel's own jetty, expensive, but definitely worth it. Excellent location compared to some of the other hotels we had considered and pleased we had chosen the Metropole. Check-in was immediate and staff very friendly. We had asked for an upper floor room and found ourselves on the 1st of 3 floors. The room was small, but comfortable and had plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The bathroom was also small, with a shower over the bath, a shower curtain and not much room to move as the shower head was in the middle of the bath rather than at the end. We were on the side of the hotel, with a small canal running along side which was very noisy quite late into the night with all the water traffic, made worse by having to leave the window open due to the warm air as the air-con was not in operation.
Breakfast was included in our package, but had it not, I would have been very disappointed paying 30 euros for a buffet breakfast. Although it had all the usual, cereal, fruit, cooked meats and cheese, breads, cake etc, the hot option was scrambled egg and bacon every morning and if you wanted a poached or fried egg, that was extra.
The reception desk were always helpful, advising us of the sites to see by showing us a detailed map. Comfortable shoes are a must as you walk for miles just wandering around the side streets which are a maze, but so interesting as you never know what's around the next corner and crossing numerous little bridges. We didn't do a gondola ride for 2 reasons, the first one being that at times, it was grid lock with gondolas on the small canals, especially once the cruise ships had docked, and at 80euros for 40 minutes, you would end up probably seeing very little after trying to get through the 'traffic'. We did the whole grand canal on a vaporetta, which cost us 14 euros for us both and took about an hour to complete. It was a great way of seeing everything from the water. So easy to do, just come out of the hotel, turn right, go over the first bridge and the vaporetta station is on the left hand side - get the number 1 or 2.
Plenty of eating places, but be prepared not only for the prices, but for the high service charges too, but then again, you are in Venice!

Good points.. Very swish hotel that is very conveniently situated near St. Marks square. Staff are very accommodating and helpful. Highly recommend the Oriental Bar for cocktails and free nibbles ( Le Peschiole are a treat.!!) Very interesting family collections of cork screws, fans & crucifixes on each floor. Lovely garden to spend a warm evening sipping cocktails. We visited Murano and if you stay here you can get free trip by water taxi which saved us €120..!!!!!

Not so good...... We had a nice room overlooking side canal. Room was very warm and air-con did not work. A porter was sent to our room whom informed us the air-con was turned off and he could leave the window open..???
We had breakfast included which was ok but not worth €30 each.!

Room Tip: Try to get room upgrade overlooking lagoon.

You enter into a very plush and rich environment. We had a great time staying here. The room quality was good with a nice comfortable bathroom. The lobby, lounge all very nicely done up. Breakfast was nice and tasty. Pricey but that's the way hotels are in Venice. Above all, the location was excellent, right on the main canal, on Riva Degli Shiavoni. St. Marco square was hardly a few minutes walk and the water bus stand was right outside. Excellent hotel, excellent view, excellent location, couldn't ask for more.

Room was small and dated, bathroom was small and taps were not working properly bathroom door would shut properly we had a very bad view it was the side of the building so please request for a view. Rooms were too hot AC was not good at all, you have to pay for water from the minibar and it is very expensive. Breakfast was very expensive and noting special usually hotel breakfast so not worth paying for. Staff do not speak much English so it was very hard to communicate. Inside of the hotel very dark but nice deco. But a very good location close to all the lovely places loved the walk the boat cruise venice is absolutely beautiful. Lots of tourists so very busy loads of food places overall it was lovely hotel did let us down as we wasn't comfortable in the room.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a view or you will be stuck looking at a wall of another building!!

I wish to thank you for taking the time to write your comment on our Metropole, which is the most useful help we can have to improve our quality and service.

I am really regretful to read you were not completely satisfied with your room, and will certainly check all the aspects you mentioned. As far as temperature is concerned, I must say that until a couple of days ago the weather in Venice was really cold and dump, we absolutely needed to have heating, it rained almost everyday and winter seemed to never end. Only now the weather is beginning to be warmer, and as a consequence we will regulate room’s temperature.

I am very sorry and puzzled by the linguistic problem you found: as you can imagine a 5 star hotel’s staff as a rule speaks fluently English as well as the main languages, and the same does my staff. I will certainly check which might have been the problems that have brought to an imperfect communication.

Let me hope to have the chance in the future to show that this is not a normal standard at the Metropole, so next time you come to our Hotel I will be more than glad to meet you personally and show all the most amazing aspects of this hotel.

Meanwhile please accept my warm and sincere regards.
