“Great hotel, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

A lovely, well located hotel outside the tourist trap area between the Rialto and St Marks square but these are easily in reach either on foot or by canal. Room booked was a classic so at back of hotel but bright, clean and adequate for the price. Lovely and quiet with views over the rooftops as on the top floor. Beds and pillows a little hard but as tired from busy days out it did not prevent us sleeping.

Room Tip: Classic rooms are a goodish size for a couple.

V. good location if u are travellig to Venice for the first time by train or air ! Train station is just across the hotel .U just hav to cross one bridge .If going by air ,Pizzalo Roma is a 5 mt. walk ,from where u can catch the airport shuttle ATVO to the airport . Also the staff was v. friendly and helpful .Breakfast was adequate .Vaporetto is opp. the hotel ,so u can take water bus to Rialto or San Marco .But it takes 30 mts. to walk to San Marco ; it is v.easy to navigate with signs everywhere and believe me walking is more fun !

Room Tip: Ask in advance for rooms overlooking the grand canal .

1. Perfect location right on the Grand Canal
2. Perfect room (booked one with a balcony and canal views)
3. Staff couldn't be more friendlier
4. Breakfast more than adequate (and enough to get you through to lunch!)
5. Loved the old style of the hotel
6. Within walking distance of St Marks Square and Rialto Bridge (30 mins)
7. Lots of shops and restaurants within 5 minutes walk (Li Spagna)

Room Tip: I recommend you book a room with a canal view and balcony for the perfect stay

The hotel fronts the Grand canal, the boat docks and the railway station. If you are traveling by train and want a lovely hotel very near the station, this is the place. Boats (vaporetti) run up and down the Grand Canal so it is easy to get from one end of town to the other by boat. There are canal front rooms and others with varying shapes and sizes.

The hotel reception gave us a warm, courteous welcome after an 8 hour delay flying in from the states then traveling by train from Zurich. We arrived at 10 pm and the restaurant staff at La Cupola graciously stayed on to fix us some splendid lamb ragu with large tube pasta, a fresh rocket salad with slced pears and a melt in your mouth warm parmesan pudding. The wait staff were more than courteous. The staff knew us by name after the first evening. They were cordial and well informed offering recommendations on dining, snacking, touring, and travel.

The bathroom: Towel warmers, thick robes, and huge bath towels add comfort. Shower and tub combination with toiletries including bath salt, shampoo, bath soaps and hand cream add to the welcome.

The rooms: Windows open for fresh air while shutters keep out most light. Beds are very firm (maybe too firm?) and pillows are a little on the flat side but the front desk will supply more if you ask. An armoire with 6 hangers, a small dressing table with chair, another larger chair for sitting, tiny end tables and wall sconces for reading are all in the Venetian style. Brocade fabric (not wallpaper) covers the walls. A large Venetian glass chandelier lights the main room.

Breakfast buffet (included): fresh, crusty bread, slivers of thin ham, and choices of cheese served alongside scrambled eggs and bacon, fresh or mixed fruit, 3 kinds of juices, cold cereals with milk, and an endless pot of caffe and hot milk served buffet style in several brightly lit breakfast rooms.

Tips:
-Take your own clip-on reading light as the room has lights on either side of the bed but they are a little dim for reading.

-Boats don't run all night but nearly. If you like the windows open be prepared for the noise. Remember, this city uses waterways as streets therefore groceries, supplies, ambulances, police, luggage, taxis, all run on the Grand Canal all the time.

-Although I was determined to have a room "on the Grand Canal", I am not sure it was worth the extra price. It was nice to look out and see the boats but it was not as romantic as I had envisioned...the boats include garbage scowls, supply boats, construction boats, and ferries. There is a large construction site opposite the hotel (no noise, but not scenic). The vaporetti are large, passenger ferry-type boats. Only a few gondola ply the waters in this area. All in all, if I did it again, I would not spend the extra money.

Room Tip: A quiet room off the canal might be better...a/c is not on until May, according to local regulations...

We stayed for three days at the end of March. We had the junior suite with the canal view on the fourth floor. We had wonderful views of the canal and my husband, who is a captain, enjoyed watching the boat show below. The room was noisy with canal traffice starting around 5:00 AM but we were so tired from walking all day that it did not bother us much. We are used to the sound of boats also. The breakfast was excellent for a free breakfast also. The only down side was the included hair dryer. It was a box with a hose coming out of it. It blew air and go hot and did the job, but I have never seen anything like it. The hotel in Rome had a regular hair dryer. I might have been missing something also. Overall we really enjoyed it and would stay again.

Room Tip: The Miti Bar around the back side has excellent carbonara for an inexpensive price.

We were traveling with a group of folks and this hotel met our needs for sleep. The time not sleeping was touring Venice and enjoying all that Venice has to offer. As someone who is 6'4" bed length is always an issue, then again I slept like a baby after walking all day/night. The location to attractions, restaurants, markets, and train station is perfect. Enjoy!

Coming to venice, you have to consider the dificulties taking the luggage to the hotel. Taxi is expensive, so if the hotel isnt near "vaporeto" stop, you might have to cary them up and down a few bridges.
The Carlton is just 100m from the Bus stop that comes from the airport. Another advantage is the train station, across the canal. To trave from venice, to bologna, verona, padua, is just too easy from this location. The hotel as a very good lobby to sit and drink a coffe or tea.
The restaurant, not so good for me... A little to much Nouvele Cousin...
The rooms are small but ok
