“Long weekend in Venice with George Clooney”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 days ago NEW

Returned to Venice and the Hotel Montecarlo in late September this year. This long weekend happened to be when George Clooney was getting married. However he managed to keep out of our way.
The Best Western Hotel Montecarlo has been referbished of late and is even better than on our previous visit a few years' ago.
Positioned very close to the Piazza San Marco in a narrow walkway.
The staff are very helpful and informative. Good size rooms and bathrooms.
When we return to Venice we will once again stay at the Montecarlo.

Room Tip: Noise levels are quite acceptable for a city especially with no traffic, but rooms at the rear of th...

Located 50 metres from San Marco piazza. Cannot really get more central, and the price is not bad either. The bathroom is small but very modern and adequate. Great breakfast to power you up for a day's walking as well.
The only negative was no in room kettle and complimentary coffee. Was missed during our mid winter visit.
Getting to the hotel is easy per previous posts. Pass underneath the bell tower next to the basilica. Turn right into the first Calle, second left. The hotel is on your right after about 20 metres

The rooms decor is a bit garish but in keeping with the 'authentic' nature of the hotel.

Bathroom was great with good water pressure and luxurious linens.

The breakfast was OK - don't expect a western breakfast offering.

Be sure to close both the glass and wooden shutters as the street noise is quite loud with many nearby restaurants.

The staff were all lovely and keen to help.

Room Tip: Rooms in the higher floors are quiter.

The Montecarlo is a very solid hotel. Wonderful customer service. Comfortable rooms and very convenient. Also it is a good value. There is a very nice breakfast , but what realy impressed us was the helpfulness of the staff. We would stay there again.

This was our second visit to this hotel as the location was perfect for St Marks Square (2 minutes walk). The room was a good size and delightful décor. The breakfast was perfect for us, plenty of choice. The reception desk was extremely helpful and friendly. Would definitely return again.

Travel tip: From Marco Polo airport there are a number of options to get to Venice centre. We chose the Alilaguna boat (Runs every half hour this season from 06:15 to 00:15) signposted immediately outside the arrivals which costs 27 Euros return and took around 90 minutes to reach St Marks square and had the benefit of excellent views of Venice. Tickets and help are available from just inside the arrivals hall.

Great location near St Marks Square and lots of eating places nearby although if you wanted to go for a walk there's eating places everywhere handy within 10 mins. Very nice room with safe (you need to ask for a key) and very accommodating staff. We had room 309 which was very quiet except for some foot noise from the room above

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2014

I counted 150 paces from the corner of St Marks square to the reception desk.

There were sensibly priced affordable restaurants all around us.

The concierge recommended two and both were just the sort we described and really pleasant and good value.

The souvenir shopping in this area and over to Rialto is much more sensible than in the streets leading out of the 'posh' end of St Marks heading towards academie.

The hotel was immaculately clean. Our shuttered family room had a small balcony and rooftop view and sunshine. The bathroom was ultra clean and high spec fittings and it's layout was perfectly designed and the plumbing top notch. Quiet. Beds lovely...we kept sleeping in unintentionally! Breakfast with all sorts from nice scrambled eggs (not solid but fluffy) to fresh baked pastries and fresh fruit salads plus all the usual. Nice cafe macchiato and chocolate forte out of the bottomless machine.

Staff super helpful but not a nuisance... ..just there and helpful when needed.

Only plugs in room were not by bedheads but when I called down to say I needed to plug in a medical device overnight a four point extension arrived literally a minute later.

Fridge bar affordable and so was well used by us.... your feet take a beating in Venice and consciously keeping up the fluids is necessary.

We booked flights, transfers and hotel via easyjet from Southend and the whole thing was great. St Marks is last drop and first collection for airport boat transfers so if you stay at the Montecarlo you get a nice boat ride whilst everyone else gets dropped at academie and rialto etc. You also get the wow when you are dropped right there at the square. Then on the way back you are first on for best seats. We were out the back for the grand canal pick ups and the blast across the lagoon. It was another day out rather than an airport transfer!

We also booked a sunny half term week by good fortune and Venice was at its glorious and not too packed best.

We paid the standard 80 euro for a gondola from Rialto ...maybe a brisk 5 minutes walk from the hotel...and instead of the 30 minutes that is the set rate it took 45 minutes to go around the 'loop'. I tipped the helpful gondolier and he was amazed.

We went to a Baroque and Opera best of show at the school of music and it was great. Singers and musicians very good quality indeed. 103 euros for three of us.

We did the three islands in 4.5 hours tour and that was just right for us. Taking it as an all day outing using the water buses would be nicer if you wanted to do the lunch and hang out thing. Afterwards we went to St Marks which was unwelcoming and dark and underwhelming so we were much to our surprise in and out in 10 minutes then bought tickets for the other museums and then hit the Hard Rock... a regular and reliably enjoyable haven for us on holiday if one is around.

The Doge's Palace is a don't miss. Allow two hours at least unless you are a philistine. Packaged with other museums it was 30 euros for a family ticket. The other museums on St Marks are interesting enough but a bit painting and sculptury and generally museumy for me. My cultural side has its limits and I maxed it out! The museums have good cafes in them. Refresh there then stand outside or sit on the steps and listen to the Cafe Florian etc bands play for free.

Anyway. Access to all this is due to location near the heart of the action. The Montecarlo gives you that and does it with bells on.

Thanks to everyone there for adding so much to our 4 night holiday in Venice.
