“Very Good Hotel, Very Good Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2011

Very good hotel conveniently located in the heart of Venice tourist area but on a side street so did not get the noise or congestion of St Mark’s Square. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Hotel room was very nice and breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of meats, cheeses, breads and pastries. While this is a Best Western, don’t confuse it with quality of hotels in that chain in the United States. Best Westerns in Europe use the chain only for reservation system. The many Best Westerns we’ve stayed at in Europe are high quality and offer the same amenities as higher priced hotel chains. Only complaint I had with the hotel is when I called down to the front desk to ask if I could come down and get a real wine glass (so that we could have a bottle of wine in the room), I was told that I would have to buy the wine in the bar and so we had to drink out of plastic cups vice real glasses.

Arriving by private water taxi was extravagant, but I dont think that we would have found this hotel too easily otherwise. Although centraly located, if you have not been to Venice before finding this hotel (and othrs in the same street) would not have been straightforward - although when you get your bearings it is easy to find! (Getting lost in the very walkable Venice can be half of the fun - stumbling across small campo (squares) and lovely restaurants or fine palaces)

The room that we had was of a comfortable size overlooking the small street and a number of shops with half a dozen or more restaurants close by, so if your windows are open the street noise does get in - the double glazing defeats most noise, other than the local and central church bells (silent overnight). If you want to read in bed, dont try as the bed side wall lamps are not quite bright enough, but there is a handly desk lamp thet is. You are in Venice, so the fact that the TV only has one English channel (CNN) on offer is not a drawback.

The room was cleaned daily, comfortably furnished with ample storage for two and even had a mini bar (at a Venetian price).

Although there is no restaurant on site there is a small bar and orient express themed breakfast room where an ample continental style breakfast along with several hot dishes are served. The coffee on offerr at breakfast is not to write home about though.

Friendly and helpful staff.

For an exceptionaly expensive city this is a bit of a gem.

Room Tip: I have heard that there are some fabulous views from the 4th floor and that apparently asking for a...

Location could hardly be better - 50 yards North of st Mark's Basilica. Excellent breakfast. Clean rooms. Free wifi. Good restaurants either side. Will come here again if I am ever in Venice.

Do not understand the rave reviews for this hotel, unless room 404 was the extreme exception. October 2011 - The room was maintained like a crime scene, complete with spatters and stains on the walls and carpet. Bath was reasonably clean. Breakfast dining was a terrible joke, but we laughed rather than cried - funnier still was watching everyone's reaction which was exactly the same as our own - complete dismay and surprise - not in a good way. Location, location, location - if that's what you desire, than one night is survivable - although we slept atop the bed, with one eye open. Beware - no functioning air conditioning and very noisy and dirty fan system was impossible to withstand for sleep or conversation. Our hotel on our second night stay two weeks later was, much to our relief, much much better and just as convenient vis a vis location.

Room Tip: Avoid 4th floor if you must stay here - although the view of San Marco rooftops was incredible.

The only positive thing about this hotel is the location. It is very convinent from waterbus, take the stop to San Marco square, head toward the Basilica, make a left at "American Grill" and you're a few yards from the hotel. Great if you are pulling luggage around. Once you get to the hotel, however, you'll find the hotel is very old, damp, dingy and plain creepy. We stayed on the 4th floor and the ceiling was very low. My husband is over 6 feet tall, and almost hit his head. The bathroom was scary, old, and moldy. I am not typically a hotel-snob, but this was worse than any motels I've stayed at. If you are booking this for romance, stay away!

We have just returned from a 3 night break at this hotel and would thoroughly recommend it. It is just behind St Marks square and so convenient whether using the vaporetto or walking in Venice.
Everything is to hand in the area. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel facilities excellent. I would give this a higher rating than the 3 star.
I would certainly use this hotel again and recommend it to anyone.
