“what a wonderful day it can be”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

Hi you all
I was there in Februar 21013 for St. Valentine and it was the best I ever had!
This cosy B&B is located in front of San Barnaba Curch, close to Campo Santa Margherita ( centre of the venetina movida) but pretty quiet and with a wonderful view.
The structure is, as usual in Venice, ancient, charming even if simple, comfortable and clean.
I was welcommed by the joung and very expansive and nice manager which gives me some super useful tips to discover some spots of the city I've never seen( even if I live not that far from there).
For shure I'll be back as soon as possible: there is all you need for a nice stay!

This B&B was a disaster. Where to start? Well, first, when we arrived, the door was locked and no one answered either the doorbell or my very loud knocks. No check-in instructions; nothing. It turns out the owner was no where around; he must live far away, because we never saw him in 3 days there. Our phone didn't work in Venice, so what do we do? After waiting a bit and trying again, we went to a very nice shop across the street where the owner called the B&B from her phone. No one answered, so she left a message. Finally a half hour or 40 minutes later someone called back and said they would be at the B&B "shortly". Another half-hour went by and finally he showed up, not the owner, but his "agent". After showing us to the room he then demanded the entire 3 days payment IN CASH. Now, our Hotels.com reservation had noted that advance payment was not made and we would pay the hotel directly when we arrived, but nothing was said that the payment had to be cash. Naturally we didn't just happen to have 3 nights charge in euros on hand. When I protested, the agent would not budge. Had it not already been dark, thanks to the over 1 hour delay, I would have considered leaving and trying to find another place, but we did have a fair amount of luggage and the thought of wandering around Venice after dark looking for a hotel was not appealing. Finally, since the banks were closed, he agreed to let us stay the night and pay him in the morning. So we then wasted another half hour that evening finding a place to change money. I had even talked to the owner several days before to get directions, as Venice can be real confusing, and he made no mention of the "cash only" policy, or that we would need to call him upon arrival in order to check in. Unfortunately our problems were not over. For the room (the only one he had) overlooked a canal. I didn't think too much of this until we went to bed. Well, the place was a mad house. There were no real windows in the room, just shutters that only sort-of closed. Drunks were roaming the streets all night long, and their hollering echoed very loudly in the narrow streets. Others were running speed boats up the canals with stereos maxed at 3 or 4 AM. So we got just about zero sleep each night we were there, which was especially bad as we had been overnight on the airplane the previous night. What else? Well, we stayed at 6 different places on this trip, and this breakfast was clearly the worst. It was adequate, but not like we got anywhere else. The shower was a half-sized stall that required serious yoga to get into. Fortunately my wife and I are not obese. So, my advise is avoid this place at all costs.

Room Tip: No good rooms here

My husband and I are very seasoned travelers who take major trips at least three times a year and often more. We have visited 49 countries over the past 5 years, and usually stay at moderately priced hotels. We chose Ancient Venice specifically because of the reviews, and once we visited there we simply could not believe that anyone actually approved of the place. It was in total darkness when we arrived, with a dim phone number on the door. Fortunately the shopkeeper across the street was able to phone for us and the so-called concierge arrived to open the door. No assistance with suitcases up the 3 flights of stairs. The room was a joke. So tiny we could barely unpack our cases, no view, no television, poor lighting. The towels were threadbare and tiny, but the shared bathroom was so disgusting we didn't use the shower which was thick with mould. The toilet didn't flush properly. The breakfast that others raved about was table with an old plastic cloth and single, dry buns in cellophane and nothing else. The coffee maker was broken, On the morning we left, Venice was flooded and we had to wait until 11 am for the tide to subside in order to get our bags out the door. The owner arrived and was furious that we were still there after 10:30 am which was checkout time. We've stayed in Venice before, where the B&B provided rainboots and umbrellas. He offered nothing. This was the worst hotel experience we've ever had. Do not stay here.

When you look for a bed&BREAKFAST,please go somewhere else, I warn you!Bedroom is ok,breakfast is NOT.When we arrived we had to pay cash and then we didn't see the owner
anymore. We had to prepare our breakfast ourselves, but there wasn't much to prepare. No bread, only dry coockies and some marmelade. Dishes and cover in plastic! You have to share the bathroom and in your room there is no lavabo.

My review is based on what easy books web site advertises. When we arrived you have to call the manager who took 30 min to arrive while we sat outside with our luggage! When we got to our room even though we booked a double it was 2 single beds, there was NO aircon and july is hot in Venice, it was shared bathroom which we didn't know - the bathroom is more than average the shower head doesn't even hook on the wall you have to hold it. The write up on easy book about the hotel features it's 1826 mosaic floor our bedroom door constantly scrapped over it so much for preserving history. We were not offered any tourist information and when I spoke with the manager about my issues he conveniently couldnt understand English up till then he was doing fine - he just said he didn't know what the websites do. Wifi is not good connection. Breakfast if that's what you want to call it is terrible, and the restful tearoom you can use its a table and 4 chairs - wow. We ended up going else where for the same price in a quieter location just 5 minutes from this bnb and the service and accommodation was amazing. Make sure you look else where there is much better out there.

This hotel is great, the best solution for a few days in Venice and with the lost price found! The location is near everthing and stays only 30 minutes walking from San Marco.

"Ancient Venice" has been our home for 3 days. And it was a brilliant experience to live in the real Venezian 500-years-old house keeping all memories and old stories of last centuries. The room was nice and clean. From our window we could see the San Barnaba Church and campo San Barnaba - a beautiful place in the heart of Venice.
Paolo, a very interesting person, presented me an old book of Italy which was a real surprise.
The location of "Ancient Venice" is very convenient as from this point you can easily reach Accademia, San Marco, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Rialto etc. Vaporetto stop is 3 min on foot from the "Ancient Venice". And if you like walking you can have many opportunites to walk along the labirinth of Venezian calli)
I am sure Venezia is not that kind of place where you should live in 5-stars hotels but in places like "Ancient Venice" in order to fell completely the beauty of its ancient soul and charm of its century-long history) ...
