“Well, it was a bit of a rort. ”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013 via mobile

For a start, you have to remove your back pack and take it to a storage room. It's a pain. The place was pretty impressive, but every direction we turned someone was trying to extract some money from us.

“Not as great as expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

The exterior of the Basilica is very impressive, however the 'golden' interior is very difficult to appreciate as the lighting is extremely low. It does not take long to see so it is still worth a visit.

“Apotheosis of artistic beauty.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

When I was a child at school, I remember how my teacher highlighted the importance of Venice as a crossing point or a gateway between the Mediterranean world/ Western Europe and the far East that started from the modern Turkey up to China. Around thirty years later I have finally seen with my eyes the perfect building that expresses that concept. San Marco is unlike any other catholic church. The Basilica is the synthesis between East and West where every element is in a peaceful harmony with the others. The Byzantine art meets the catholic faith so creating an esoteric and mysterious symbol that later will express the wealth and the power of the "Serenissima". Apotheosis of artistic beauty.

“Best Basilica in Venice, but many others are better in Italy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

It's alright, but I've seen plenty better. At least it gets you out of the crowded square. Before you queue up, you need to know you can't take a bag in and have to leave it in a building around the corner. If you don't, you'll queue up twice.
Inside its big and gold. Also, if you want to leave the main area to see anything else, you'll have to pay. A little bit here, a little bit there. In the end, you'll pay about 12 Euros for a free visit.
We spent less than an hour in there.
