We love Italy and have returned to this beautiful country many many times. We always try to stay in either bed & breakfasts or small boutique hotels, as we like a cosy atmosphere and tranquility. So far we always managed to find a perfect spot. The Aqua Palace Hotel seemed to be another jewel in this range, this time in Venice.
When we arrived at the place, it looked indeed marvelous. The room we got assigned was magnificent, definitely not big in comparison to other four star hotels we stayed in before, but we don't mind having a small room. Unfortunately, the room was located next to an elevator. Each time the elevator went up, you clearly noticed a buzzing sound. It was not that loud, but loud enough for us to get awake at night. We asked the reception if we could change, as we would stay for a couple of days. They told us that the hotel was fully booked, but that they could provide us with another more silent room at the fourth floor. That room was less luxurious (no bath, smaller bed), but as long as we have a good bed and enjoy a good night, we are already happy. Unfortunately, that room was located close to a technical room. At night there was a constant humming sound, that often intensified. The first night was ok, but the second and third we didn't get much sleep. Additionally, the hotel is located next to a canal, and apparently located on a spot where each morning at 6:40am the Venetian garbage collectors start... collecting the garbage in their diesel boats. And if your room is located under the roof, you don't need to set up an alarm clock anymore.
All other aspects of the hotel are ok. The breakfast was sufficient, and the waitress was exceptionally kind. Overall, staff was friendly and did their best, although one time our room wasn't tidied up in time when we returned (2pm). There is no restaurant in the hotel, but there are many excellent alternatives in the neighborhood. You should definitely try the nearby Da Mario Alla Fava!
To conclude: the Aqua Palace Hotel is a beautiful, charming hotel and it has a friendly staff. However, the building itself has its drawbacks. If you plan a relaxing stay and want to enjoy this hotel, we would recommend to order a room not close to the elevator, nor on the 4th floor. We eventually did enjoy Venice, despite the rain, but it was an exhausting stay...
