“Break in Venice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

The hotel is situated by the side of the grand canal and only a short walk from Piazza Roma. Room was clean but rather dated in appearance. We were on the top floor which proved to be very hot. Breakfast was plentiful, but for those who want a cooked breakfast you will be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask to be on the first floor, no lift

this hotel is almost across the grand canal from santa lucia train station, but you have to cross a bridge to get there, with 2 suitcases it is not easy, our room overlooked the canal,it was a very small but clean room, piazza sa marko is at the other end of the canal, appox 40 minutes walk, but plenty bars on the way, breakfast was usual continental, but plenty to eat,as the weather was nice we ate in the garden

Room Tip: the hotel is 5 mins walk from piazzale roma where the shuttle bus runs to and from the airport

We stayed here for 1 night while touring northern Italy. It is worth noting first and foremost that Venice is extremely expensive, which should be taken into consideration when reviewing hotels here.
Hotel Canal is located relatively close to parking and the bus stations, but we drove in and chose to walk to the hotel. If you are not in shape, good luck trucking your baggage yourself. I definitely recommend a porter as they can be found everywhere.
Although the location is great, the hotel itself fell short of expectations. There is no elevator up to the rooms and we were not offered assistance. Being young and athletic, this was not a problem for us, but if you are older and not in the best shape, this will not be easy. The room was very small, but we were only there to clean up and sleep.
No dinner or lunch is offered, but breakfast is included in the rate. To be blunt, breakfast was not good. You eat outside in the back garden, but that is about the only positive about this meal.
In summary, this is not a bad choice if you are staying for 1 night in Venice. While the location is very good, our expectations fell short given the rate paid.

Room Tip: I was led to believe all rooms are the same, just different views.

The Hotel Canal is located on the Grand Canal and a five minutes walk from the Bus Station. This is not a hotel for the elderly with heavy suitcases or any infirmity. There are no elevators or porters to help with luggage. In addition you have to climb a number of steps to get to the hotel from the bus stop.
Breakfast at the hotel could only be described as very sparse with no variety and no meals for vegetarians.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the first floor overlooking the Grand Canal

Stay 20/07/13 - 22/7/13. Great location for all the sights, most are within a 20/30 minute walk also very close to the transport hub where you can get buses, taxis and trains. The hotel looks very run down and needs a major refurbishment inside and out! The rooms are clean and tidy but very dated and the air con is virtually non existent which makes for a very uncomfortable sleep in the summer months. The complimentary breakfast is excellent and there is staff on hand to make sure there is plenty of every thing.

Me & my boyfriend have just recently stayed here and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised for the amount of money we payed for it and the location.

Our room was clean and spacious with well fitted decor & great views.

The hotel is in a great location as you aren't far away from any of the main attractions. To be fair we did do a lot of walking but we enjoyed the views. Also very hot when we visited!

Lots of lovely restaurants in reach of this hotel and not far from the bus stop.

We had breakfast included with the price which consisted of rolls, bread, hams, cheeses & cereal! :)
Basic - but nice.

Would stay here again!

STAY 16/08/13-19/08/13

LOCATION: This really is a brilliant location as it is within easy walking distance of both the train station (cross the bridge on the left of the station and then walk along the canal to the right and the hotel is just before the next bridge) and the bus station (walk to the Grand Canal and walk to the right crossing 2 small bridges, the hotel is on the right just after the 2nd canal). Both places are about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Being within walking distance makes it much easier on arrival in Venice as the vaporetto system (water bus) can be difficult to work out unless you know exactly which bus and stop you need for your hotel. They are also always very full so navigating them with luggage is hard. We were travelling as a party of 4 with lots of luggage between us so ended up agreeing to a wheeled porter service. We agreed to pay E10 for this service and between us felt it was well worthwhile, especially as the porter knew exactly where the hotel was. It also meant we only had to carry ourselves over the bridge and not have to carry our cases! If you're staying in Venice for any period of time it is worth knowing that there is a self service launderette round the corner from the hotel (you see the sign for it as you walk there from the train station) and also the closest supermarket (The Coop) is 5 minutes away near the bus station. There is a park half way between the hotel and the bus station which is a quiet spot for a picnic or a chill out away from the hustle and bustle of Venice).

CHECK IN: Our booking information didn't state the check in times and we got to the hotel about 12pm. The official check in time is actually 1pm but we were lucky enough to be able to go to our rooms straight away after checking in which was a real bonus.

ROOMS: Our party had rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor and I think we were staying in the Walter Hotel section of the hotel. None of the rooms had a view which we weren't fussed about. Trekking up the stairs on foot (no lift) is a bit of a chore, especially after a day's travel or sight seeing. Our room was on the 2nd floor (Room 202) and was plenty big enough for the 2 of us. It had a double and a single bed and the single was handy for keeping our bags on. The air conditioning worked although didn't get the room super cold - the coldest was about 23 degrees. The decor was very old fashioned and I like to think typically Venetian. It was very clean and there was also a plug in anti mosquito device which we used and I think must have worked as we didn't get bitten (lots of mozzies all over Venice). The bathroom was clean as well although the bath was a bit odd at only about 3/4 size! It was fine for showering though. To use the safe you pay a E10 deposit at Reception for a key and the money is returned on check out. The mini fridge worked and you could remove their contents to chill your own drinks.

BREAKFAST: Having breakfast included saved money for sure as food all over Venice was incredibly expensive (was very pleased to discover a couple of good supermarkets). It was very basic but still had some variety - ham, cheese triangles, cereal, yoghurt and some pastries. The coffee was not good but you could make tea or have juice. The location for breakfast was lovely in the little garden at the back. We took our own drinks and nibbles there one evening which is nice.

EATING AND DRINKING IN VENICE: This is SOOOOOOOOOO expensive and I thought noticeably more than when I visited 4 years ago. I know there is always a mark up on what you can pay in the supermarket and what you pay at a kiosk or a cafe or a restaurant. I was pleased to discover the supermarket. I didn't trust the water for drinking in the hotel even though I am sure it is probably absolutely fine. In the supermarket you could buy large bottles of sparkling (frizzante) water for 36cents as opposed to 4 euros plus in a restaurant and packs of 6 small (500ml) bottles of water for less than 3 euros - at the kiosks they are anywhere up to 2 euros each. Cans of beer were also really good value - 70cents a can for nastro azzuro. I would also recommending having a picnic and stocking up at the supermarket. It was great seeing lovely fresh Italian produce. There are a couple of markets as well to get fresh fruit and veg from.
