“Lovely little B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2010

This is a small B&B just a few minutes walk from Accademia, close to Peggy Gugenheim's museum and well connected with the vaporetti.

There are just a few rooms but they are charming with nice individual pieces of furniture. Clean and fairly spacious for Venice and for the price.

Nice breakfast in the morning - quite basic but a few different options every day.

Owners were a lovely couple who were friendly and helpful without being overbearing. Told us about a little festival on one of the islands which was an interesting alternative view of Venice.

Venice is enchanting by the way...

Dorsoduro 461 is found approx 3 minutes walk from the Ponte Dell Accademia on the South side of the Grand Canal so main attractions like Piazza St Marco can be reached on foot in 10 to 15 minutes. There are a number of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby so it is a good location.
The owner, Francesco isn't always on site but having called ahead to let him know we were nearby we were met outside by the owner of the hotel two doors away. She showed us around and gave us the keys. We hardly saw or heard anyone during our stay so it was almost like having a private apartment.
The furniture is almost all antique giving the place an air of elegance. Our room had a bed, dresser, table and chair, hanging rails, TV and a small fridge. There was an en suite shower room which was clean and tidy and simply decorated.
There is a small entrance hall downstairs which contains a piano. All of the rooms are upstairs leading off a small room. There is also a breakfast room with a balcony which is open until about 10.30am each day. Guests help themselves to a selection of breads, cereals and yoghurt and a selection of teas, coffees, hot chocolate or fruit juice.
Being on a gluten free diet I was grateful to Francesco that he provided some extra food for me after I emailed him before arriving.
If you are looking for a quiet base in a good location this could be the place for you.
I would also say that after having made the booking Francesco responded to several email queries very quickly and speaks very good English.

We stayed at this B&B for two days, in the room downstairs, on the right of the entrance. The room is well appointed with antique furnuture and is clean, but no air conditioning. The shower is quite small and the shower corner is not separated from the rest of the bathroom, so water is all over the floor. Maybe their rooms upstairs are better, but we didn`t see them.
The big problem is mosquitos. Don`t forget to ask the owners to give you an anti-mosquito device that you can plug into the electricity, then you will sleep, otherwise you will spend the whole night killing the little monsters. Perhaps, a good idea for the owners will be to install mosquito nets on the windows.
The breakfast is prepackaged bakery and jams already in your room when you arrive, you just have to boil your own tea/coffee.
The location is great, close to Peggy Guggenheim museum, the Santa Maria della Salute church, and two boat stops on the Grand Canal.

Overall, you can expect more from a bed and breakfast than we had, especially in terms of breakfast.

We have stayed in Venice twice before. Dorsoduro 461 is a delightful B&B furnished with period furniture in a quiet area of Venice. The rooms are spacious as are the bathrooms (we had 2 doubles-one used for 2 persons and one used for one person). The home is near 2 water bus stops and very convenient to transportation. The rooms are on the upper floor with a narrow steep set of stairs. This was problematic with luggage (of course, no elevator). There was construction going on in the street, subtracting from the quaintness of the experience. The breakfast consisted of instant coffee, packaged toast and biscuit and fresh fruit always available in the room. We suggest going out for breakfast. Biggest problem was that the room filled with mosquitos every night. We could not close the windows as there is no air conditioning and the mosquitos had the breakfast we were lacking. Recommend with reservations. For Venice, not a bad value.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2009

I selected Dorsoduro 461 for its location and some good reviews I saw on LateRooms.com. However, this B&B was among the worst I ever stayed at (apart from hostels I used in college). Accomodation was described as having a private bath but in fact the bath was across the hallway. It had an improvised shower cabin made from a torn old curtain where I could barely fit (and I am not tall or heavy by any means), and water spilled everywhere when you took a shower.

First, beware that there is heavy construction on the street where this hotel is located as of May/June 2009, and the workers woke us up every morning at 7:40-8AM. Moreover, it was extremely hot when we visited, and this place has no air condtioners, so we couldn't sleep at night. We had the windows open to be able to breathe, but as a result there were so many moscitoes that we were badly bitten every night. Another couple from across the hall stayed only one night instead of the two they booked, and moved out early even though they already paid. This is the only place I ever saw that requires full payment in cash upfront- what does this tell you?! We saw the owners only when we checked in, and never again.

Now about the room. Our room was tiny even by European standards (and I travel to Europe regularly), and on top of it was filled with non-functional huge furniture pieces. We had a queen size bed, a huge unusable chest and two huge chairs with a tiny journal table where we were supposed to eat our breakfast (more on that point later), and a tiny mini-bar. There was a temporary rod with a few hangers and a small foldable Ikea-style storage item which couldn't fit our clothes, so we lived out of a suitcase for days. Service was non-existent, our towels (one was dirty to begin with) or linens have not been changed in the 6 days that we stayed here.

Breakfast was packaged croissants, canned juices, and tea bags. There were also some not-so-fresh fruits in the room, but we haven't tried them, nor did we try the croissants.

If you think this is how it should be for this price and location in Venice, I can assure you it's not the case. For comparison, our relatives who stayed at another Venetian B&B (better located- closer to San Marco) at the same time had very good service, air conditioner and fresh breakfast in a special area of their B&B every morning with fresh-made coffee of their choice, and they paid the same as us.

If you are looking for hotel service this is not for you. First you have to find it and Venice is not easy with luggage even on the beaten path. The path to this B&B is undergoing extensive renovation and there are a lot of temporary surfaces to cross. Once finished it will be lovely. The welcome from Francesco is warm and he will help get you and your luggage up the twisting steps to the attic bedroom that we stayed in. He has one other room we did not see but also up the stairs - which would be challenging for anyone with mobility problems.

The room was clean and bright and furnished wiht interesting firniture and pictures -all described in the room details. The shower room looked newly fitted. Beware a flood if you shower too long or have them in quick succession. The bed was comfortable . We tried to access the internet via the password supplied but failed - probably our fault.

Breakfast was disappointing as it was already in the room and was packaged roll, toast and biscuits, a carton of juice and some fruit. There was a kettle to make a hot drink. So I wouldn't recommend it for the breakfast! I would recommend the location if you do not have heavy luggage. Tucked away behind the Academia vaporetta stop it is close to the galleries and to some less touristy parts of Venice whilst being accessible quickly to all parts by boat.
It was very peaceful and with a pleasant view over old tiled roofs. The view when a cruise ship moved into or out of Venice was very odd as you can see from the picture. We slept well and only the discovery that we had shared the room with a very greedy mosquito marred the experience.

So in spite of some reservations I would recommend it to the slightly adventurous not put off by the need to supplement breakfast !
