This wonderful romantic restaurant is tucked away and off the beaten trap a little way north of the Rialto but it was handily close to our hotel (Al Ponte Mocenigo - also excellent!) so we had our first meal here on the evening of our arrival. What a perfect start to our stay in Venice - a city often criticised for its touristy restaurants - but this was the genuine article, serving lovingly prepared cuisine with fresh, local ingredients in a homely setting.
My wife started with pickled sardines with salt cod while I had the magnificent mixed raw seafood platter and both became a benchmark for meals throughout our stay. We chose a relatively local Lugana wine from Lake Garda and this was the perfect complement to our fish meal, zesty and fresh and chilled to perfection.
Our shared main of mixed fried seafood was incredible - deservedly a signature dish for the restaurant - and our attentive hostess, Larisa, was right to point out that all the fish was so fresh that the varied fish tastes didn't need any lemon juice (although we could have has some if we had wanted). Desserts were tempting but the enormous main course had finished us off - next time perhaps!
It was a rainy night and we were seated inside although the covered outside area was warm despite the weather - both Larisa and everyone in the kitchen worked so hard to keep their dinner guests happy and more than succeeded with us. We were delighted with our choice and will certainly return just as soon as we can get back to this beautiful city.
