“Nice but not for everyone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

Clean, beautifully restored, friendly hosts. As said in other reviews, breakfast is limited, so if a hearty breakfast is important you won't get it here. Very limited English spoken so if you are not adventurous or pre-organized with everything, May not be place for you. Not far from train station, quiet street right off main area, so a great location. Restaurant across street Vesuvio is a great place to to eat. We were promised a room with two beds, did not get room were served so had to sleep on couch. Not optimal.

Room Tip: You can ask but no guarantees.

Stayed here with my husband mid April 2013. The booking was made very efficiently via email, we had to change our dates twice and that did not inconvenience the owner. Their only request was that we secure our booking with a 100 Euros deposit, which we did.
Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by the daughter of the house, Giorgia, who took the time to give us very good recommendations and advice for visits and restaurants. Including advice against expensive gondola and water taxi services. The house itself is a trip in the past, but superbly renovated and furnished.
Contrarily to other guests who posted reviews here, we did not feel breakfast was lacking. The packaged goods served are so packed for hygiene reasons and are quite common in Italy. There was cheese, ham, cakes, bread, fruit, yoghurt, nutella, juice, all sorts of teas..... The only thing that bothered me about breakfast is that it is served quite early, between 8 and 9 a.m only, but in Venise it is good to start your day early as there is so much to be done and seen.
We initially booked the Stelle room, but lost it to Primavera due to our change of dates. It was a smaller room, but very pleasant, quiet and with its own little terrace overlooking the interior yard. Bed was very, very comfortable, room was spotlessly clean and we had a daily refilled bowl of candy at our disposal.
The location is also ideal, a short walking distance from San Marco, in a less touristic, but yet enchanting and beautiful, part of the city. There is a daily market for fresh produce just outside of the B & B, there are also tons of shops, restaurants in the vicinity.
Finally, they have two family rooms, so we are planning on going back with our children as soon as possible.
I highly recommend Antico Portego for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. It was a dream.
Giorgia, ti ringraziamo ancora e a presto!
Luca and Hortense

Room Tip: Stelle or Venere rooms can accommodate 4. Venere has a nice view on the street.

We stayed one night at Antico Portego [www.bbanticoportego.com] in early September at the beginning of a Peregrine Adventures Tour. It’s relatively easy to reach using the #1 Vaporetto [water bus]. Board just outside Venice’s main train station [Venezia SL] & get off at the 2nd stop [San Marcuola] on the Grand Canal; then it’s a 5-7 minutes walk.
It is a wonderful B & B. We have been to Venice before, are likely to return, and now know first hand of two excellent places to stay. [Our previous stay was at Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo [www.alpontemocenigo.com], also easily accessed by vaporetto.]
In some respects they share similar positive characteristics. Antico Portego B & B’s old buildings, hardly recognisable as a hotel from outside, have been massively renovated yet retain the wonder of the centuries. It is an intimate establishment, with rooms that have been decorated with loving care. From the detailed photo file in our room we noted that each room has its own character, and that its location, shape and size will dictate its features. Similarly the wide, high corridors and public areas are beautifully decorated and impressive.
Our good-sized room had quality bedding and a modern, clean sparkling bathroom. Although it faced into a courtyard this wasn’t a particular problem and had the advantage of quietness - no noise from the busy streets to worry us. The room also featured an intricate frescoed high ceiling.
The staff members are just great: warm, friendly, helpful, welcoming and hugely proud of their B and B as they have a right to be. The breakfast was more than adequate with elegant dining tables featuring quality napery and cutlery.
This hotel is strongly recommended if you enjoy a quiet, homely atmosphere. It has a range of eateries close by, it is an easy walk to major sites in Venice, and its location encouraged fascinating back street exploring.

Located in Cannaregio which proved to be an excellent location as the area is quite affordable compared to area around St Marks. Lots of nice restaurants and shops and the market nearby. The hotel has very ornate rooms, each is different. We were in the Apollo room which overlooks the road outside. Not at all noisy and very spacious and comfortable. Georgia the hostess was very pleasant and helpful. Only issue was the breakfast that was all out of plastic.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that suits your needs. They will accommodate your requirements if they can.

Antico Portego is 100% the hidden treasure of all of Europe, we arrived one day early in Venezia with no room and hit the lottery by obtaining a room in this bed & breakfast. We were greeted by the owner who presented us with a gift upon check in a lovely keychain and necklace, candles lit the entry way to this magnificent home filled with family heirlooms and beautiful furniture. The room was large and beautiful beyond words we gazed up at a beautiful venetian chandelier surrounded by a painting, the home was cozy with a lovely family feeling, Our breakfast was delicious I highly recommend this hidden treasure of a bed and breakfast. I was extremely sad to have to leave and stay in the rundown overpriced noisy Hotel Rialto I only wish we could have stayed the entire visit at Antico Portego,

Antico Portego was the nicest room we stayed in on our entire honeymoon. The room was HUGE and we were able to really enjoy the city because of the location. The owners daughter (Georgia I think?) was incredibly kind! She helped us and gave us lots of great reccomendations. We absolutely fell in love with Venice and would definitely return to Antico Portego.
