“Good choice for being centrally located”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

We stayed at Best Windows for 3 nights at the end of our first trip to Italy. You have to understand what you are booking here. For the right traveler, this is a great option.

We loved being right in the middle of things, since we only had a short time to explore the city. The location is perfect if you don't care about not being right on a canal, and don't mind having crowd noise when you have the windows open. I loved opening the door to the building and walking right into the middle of everything. You are right in the heart of the tourist area - of course the downside to that is that prices in the area (especially restaurant prices) are sky-high, even by Italy standards. The main water taxi stop is within a 3 minute walk.

We were careful to book a suite (#701) with St. Mark's views, and asked for a suite on the first floor. The suite down there has higher celings and larger windows, and is the one featured in pictures on the website. It was a blessing, since there are steep stairs and no lift. The rooms on the higher floors would have been challenging when carrying luggage.

Here were the downsides - they wouldn't stop me from booking this guest room again, but should be taken into account when choosing whether this place is for you:

1. No free breakfast of any kind (we went down the side streets and grabbed delicious hot sandwiches, and took them back to the room to enjoy.)

2. The mini-bar had a price list, but was completely empty except for one bottle of water. (Fine with us - we used it to chill our store-bought wine.)

3. At least when we were there, something was wrong with the A/C and we were freezing the entire time. The hotel staff that handles this property was unable to fix it and gave up trying. (For the most part the hotel staff was quite helpful, but we did run into one gentleman that was a little rude.)

4. Decorations here are fairly minimal, so you aren't getting a luxury suite with all the fru-fru. Room 701 was lovely enough for me - again, I liked the high ceilings and all the light from the tall windows.

Overall, I would likely stay here again, unless trying a hotel right on the canals became a high priority.

Room Tip: If you like the rooms on the website, looking out to St. Mark's Square and with the tall windows...

Not all rooms are overlooking St. Mark's Square. We were allocated a room on the side, overlooking the side street, so hence no view of St. Mark's Square! Very disappointing and very expensive for what it was. The room was very tired looking and needed renovation. Also piles of cardboard, which we assume were for disposal, were outside our door. The staff at check in were not very helpful. It looks far better on the website than it does in real life.

Yes, the view is fantastic but I've stayed in nicer roadside motels. Cheap construction, not well planned out room design ( Our Queen sized bed was actually two twins pushed together, Classy! ), no amenities except for a couple of packages of Nescafe instant coffee, rude employees and you have to carry your luggage up flights of a narrow staircase.
The one thing that irked me the most was getting into the Best Windows building when the water rises in St. Marks Square. Unfortunately, we arrive back at the building during one of these occurrences and there was no way to get from the elevated platforms of St. Marks Square to the front door of Best Windows without removing your shoes and socks and rolling your pant legs up to your knee. When I called down to the front desk of the affiliated hotel to let them know what I had just experienced at their so called 5 Star residence, the rude person I spoke with assured me that it would occur again every morning and evening. At that point I was so astonished by his ignorance, that explaining what customer service and accommodation was, would be fruitless.
Also beware that the front door at the main entrance to this building does not have a self closing mechanism and we found the door wide open one evening and it made for a scary entrance into a dark staircase.
People, there are better choices.

Best Windows is not a hotel. It is not a B&B. Instead it offers you a room, a very large room (perhaps 2 or 3 times the size of a typical European hotel room) overlooking the Piazza San Marco, the very center of Venice. There is no breakfast, no front desk, no elevator, no slippers or bathrobe, and no umbrella to use when it rains. Yes, there are cafes close by, and you can phone the front desk at the Hotel Panada and hope you get an answer. The rooms, four in number, are all housed in the Clock Tower. We had no problem, as some have reported, with the chimes of the clock or the Basilica. Our room was one floor up from the piazza level and faced the piazza. A similar room was one floor above ours. Apparently, there are two other rooms that do not face the piazza. I will leave the description of our accommodation to the photos I have attached. The bathroom was small but quite efficient and very clean--no mold; the shower was superb. The bed was somewhat harder than average but not exactly "concrete" either. But, as everyone says, after all the walking in Venice one has no trouble sleeping.
We stayed 5 nights in March and loved it. We, however, have been to Venice so many times that we do not need the help of a front desk. And while there are many cafes in the area that serve rolls and coffee, they do not offer bacon and eggs if that is what you are looking for and which you might find offered at some hotels. Some of the things that were minor irritants were that one had to use 3 keys to get into the room, the first at the door at the piazza level, the second at the door leading to the space outside the room, and the third to enter the room itself. Then to power on the lights one had to insert a key, not a problem in daylight but not that easy in the dark. A second nit was that there were few outlets for charging our electronic devices. Some outlets went dead when the chandelier light was turned off. But we did find outlets by the windows that stayed live regardless. A third nit was that the tea and coffee service in the room supplied no regular coffee, even when we asked the maid that came in each day to clean up. On the plus side was the wi-fi connection was flawless. You only had to sign in once; there was no need to sign each time one returned to the room or to sign in on a daily basis, as at so many other places. And it worked without a hiccup for the entire 5-day stay.
The room cost 199 euros per night, a bargain relative to other accommodations in Venice, even with no breakfast and no concierge service (of course, one could walk over to the Hotel Panada for that service). I cannot recall having paid less for a room in Venice in the 10 or more times we have stayed there in the last 20 years. Overpriced? Give me a break! And, I believe, if you want a room with a view over the Piazza San Marco, there is no other place. If you have been to Venice before, this is a 5-star choice for you. But for first timers, since it is not a complete hotel or B&B, just a lovely room, I would rate it 4 stars. Either way, it is a great value.

Room Tip: One of the two rooms facing the piazza are a must; otherwise, find another place.

This suite was overpriced. I was very disappointed with the unfriendly service when we arrived. Once we were brought to the room, the general appearance of it seems charming till you sit on the furniture or go to bed. The bed was like sleeping on concrete and the pillows like bricks. The bathroom was not as luxurious as advertised. Very small bathtub and some mold around the tub. My advice would be save your money for a serenaded gondola ride and avoid this overpriced hotel.

Room Tip: Lower room very noisy.

We had the pleasure of staying in Best Windows during a recent stay in Venice. It might be a little tired, and it might be a struggle with the stairs (no lift), and the decor might leave a little to be desired, but nothing could take away from the magnificient experience of staying right on St Marks Square! Sure the linen was a little thread bare, but who cares when you can walk out of your front door and straight into St Marks Square (AND have it all to yourself when the jetlag hits at 3am)? Magical experience! And due to the wonderful acoustic windows, the room was never subjected to the 'hustle and bustle' noise of the Square below. If you have an issue with stairs, there are two rooms on the first level (but due to some local planning restrictions, you won't be able to book them through any online service - contact the hotel direct if you want them). The facility is managed by another hotel (around the corner) - bit tricky to work out where to get the keys from when you first arrive, but otherwise no detraction to the stay at all. In fact, a single phone call will have service staff arrive at your room in a blink. It is by no means the cheapest hotel around but, in terms of what you get for your money, it is well worth it!

Room Tip: Always ask for a room facing St Marks Square - it is worth the extra cost!

Overpriced. Not luxurious as stated. Not a 4 star hotel. Linens were thin and had been mended. (You could see the holes that had been sewn). Mold in the bathroom. View of clock tower was not the view of the clock tower.

Room Tip: Do not stay. Not worth it.
