“A hotel that gives us what we want year after year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2009

We liked the same things we have liked during our previous 3 trips to the Hotel Sant'Elena - which is why we come back every year. We like the proximity to the open lagoon and the vaporetto (waterbus) stop which is only 200m from the hotel. Pity the poor travellers who have to lug heavy baggage around at the start and end of their holidays! The vaporetto runs very frequently, and gets you to St. Mark's Square in 10 minutes (*don't forget to buy your multi-day pass for the vaporetto at the airport - unlimited walk on / walk off trips*). If you feel like stretching your legs, St. Mark's is only a 20 minute stroll away along the lagoon edge, passing the Bienniale Gardens and the Arsenale / Maritime Museum (both worth a look).

The food is fine and plentiful, the cleanliness is impeccable, the rooms comfortable and air conditioned, and, being in the only green area of the island, it is fresh. A former convent, the hotel has an enclosed lawned garden which is ideal for peaceful relaxation, sunbathing and breakfast.

We are seasoned travellers and are quite demanding when it comes to service and value for money. We also believe that good service should be rewarded by recommendation, and a number of our friends have taken our advice and stayed at Sant'Elena. All have been delighted that the hotel was as good as we said it would be.

The low spot during our last stay was that we saw a mosquito there once.

If you go in 2010, we may see you there!

We just returned from Venice staying 9 nights at the Hotel Sant' Elena. I was there to attend a conference and to visit La Biennale di Venezia. For Biennale visitors the location could not be better. A quick 5 minute walk to the Giardini or one Vaporetto stop, and 12 to 15 minute walk to the Arsenale or two Vaporetto stops. The Hotel Sant' Elena is tastefully decorated, clean, modern and comfortable and was a wonderful quiet oasis in comparison to the crowds around San Marco. We had a small but very nice comfortable room on the top / attic level with a view of the garden. The complimentary breakfast was generous and had something for everyone and it was lovely to sit outside and eat breakfast in the garden solarium. We would definitely stay here next time we come to Venice and would recommend it to anyone visiting Venice but especially if you are visiting the Biennale.

We really liked this hotel for its out of the way appeal. It only took us about 25 mins to walk to the square along the waters edge. We had a very comfortable garden room, the breakfast was surprisingly good (compared to the other 2 hotels we stayed at in Italy). We were part of a Globus tour and this hotel was one of the best we stayed in.

This was my 3rd visit to Venice and after a days sightseeing it was a joy to walk into the 'fridge' that was our lovely room at this hotel.

Perfect location, set in a quiet area near a park and about 2 mins walk to the vaparetto stop which took you practically anywhere in the lagoon. We reckoned it was about a 25min walk to st marks over several bridges. We did it several times at night but was too hot to be walking during the day! Vaparettos go practically every 5-10mins and were a lot cooler!!

Everything everyone has said about the hotel is true - fab breakfast, high quality rooms. Free, albeit slow, internet connection. We got a free welcome drink on arrival and enjoyed cocktails in the garden on our last night which were worth 9euro! The bartender knocked up the best long island iced tea we've ever tasted!

Top tips - if you're travelling from the airport, buy your vaparetto pass from the desk at arrivals (we paid 33euro for 72hrs) and you can use this on the no 5 bus which leaves directly outside the airport and takes about 20 mins to Piazza Roma where you can catch the 51,52,41 or 42 water bus directly to the S.Elena stop. Hotel is 2 mins with no steps or anything that would make wheeling your luggage a problem.

We used this pass pretty much constantly during our stay and it was much cheaper than the airport waterbus transfers which were an extra 25 euro. We did the trip in less than an hour - buses back to the airport are 10 past and 40 past the hour from the bus stop - the vaparetto takes about half an hour and the bus about 20mins.

The restaurant Al Pampo round the corner from the hotel was by far the nicest meal we had - and by far the cheapest!! We paid about 67 euro for 3 courses each and a litre of red wine, very authentic and left us with enough cash to sit in st marks square later watching the palm orchestras!! Al pampo is closed on Sundays.

Watch out for places in central venice offering cheap pizza - the drinks are outragiously expensive! We got stung for 12euro for 2 beers with a 7euro pizza!!

Overall the hotel comes highly recommended if you want to escape the hussle and bussle of venice, it's close enough to pop in and out but far enough away to be quiet and calm! We got a good deal which is why we booked but i'd go back there in a heartbeat!

Since it was our 3rd visit to Venice I must admit our expectations were low.
This hotel was a total surprise and a good one. The rooms are spacious, new, and decorated with taste. The air conditioning worked perfectly. The bathroom (shower) is very clean & bright, and large enough. Breakfast was good – even our spoiled teenagers enjoyed it.
We took the boat from San-Marko's square – 5 minutes sail - so the distance from the "center" (if Venice has one) is not something I would think about. The neighborhood is peaceful and quiet, and the hotel locates 2 minutes walk from the Vaporetto station.
I would definitely stay in this hotel again, If i ever return tto Venice.

We had a junior suite with balconies overlooking the hotel garden. The room and bathrom were tastefully decorated and very clean. Breakfasts were good and we had a pleasant dinner in the restaurant. The staff were extremely helpful and sorted out a minor problem immediately. The hotel was a pleasant walk or short waterbus ride away from St Mark's Square. Altogether a great hotel representing good value for money.
