“Frustrating, because this hotel is almost excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We loved the location!! Some reviews complain it is 'out of the way' but it's 3 Vaporetto stops or a 20 minute amble to the Doges Palace!! Hardly remote. The area is quiet and spacious, lots of green, only a few hundred yards from the nearest Vap-Stop, - only downside is if you want to just pop out for a drink or snack there's not a lot there, - though we did find a pleasant cafe a few blocks away. Also the hotel doesn't really have a lounge as such, just a small bar area squeezed in the corner of the restaurant, or a few seats in the hotel lobby, so its not a place to spend an evening. But hey - when in Venice, who sits in the hotel??
We loved our room... full of character, reasonably sized, nice bathroom with everything we needed. We were on the top floor and had a view out over the gardens to the canal and the lagoon beyond - lovely. All very charming.
Now the bad news - when we went down for breakfast, the queue trailed back into reception. When I asked at the desk if this was usual, or had we just picked a bad moment, I was told that there was nearly always a queue, as the hotel sleeps 150 and sits less than 60. Sounds like very poor planning to me!!
The staff were happy for us to leave our luggage when we checked out, but another peculiar thing - when we came to collect it before leaving Venice, we wanted to use the hotel bathroom before setting off. Apparently there is only ONE public toilet - I mean one cubicle for both genders to share!!! - hidden away on the first floor. So - obviously - there was a queue!!!
Shame that I will remember this otherwise excellent hotel for its queues rather than its charm.

Room Tip: Top floor will give you a lagoon view.

Dear Guest from Devon

First of all I would like to thank you for taking the time to share on TripAdvisor website your experience at our hotel. We are sure that any comments, either positive or negative, from our clients are important to improve the quality of our hotel.
After all, I was pleased to read positive comments about the location and room cleaning and design. This is the result of our strong efforts made to keep the quality always high.

Regarding your comment about the crowding of the breakfast room, I can assure you that, as the other reviews you can read on TripAdvisor, it is very unusual that we have a long queue to go in the breakfast room. You found them because the day you went down, in Venice we have an extraordinary day of "high water" and all of our guests decided not to go out, having a brunch in our hotel.

Dear guest from UK, we are honoured that you chose our hotel, and we will continue to do our best to be worthy of your selection. We look forward to a future opportunity to better serve your lodging needs.

Yours sincerely

Francesco La Pietra

We had originally booked a hotel in the mainland but change to Hotel Sant'Elena to stay away from the hordes of tourists. We were really glad we did so. The area is quite and easy to reach on the vaporetto. Venice in September is expensive. This hotel was no different. We booked two rooms for five people.

The good:
Lovely green surroundings and nice local, reasonably priced restaurants.
The rooms are modern and clean and we had a nice view to the courtyard.
Breakfast is included in the price of the room
WiFi available in rooms. There are two computers in the lobby that you can use free of charge.
Venice without the crowds. Who knew?

The not so good:
Our shower leaked and it got the whole bathroom wet
The air conditioning did not work properly. Our room was a bit too warm all the time
The staff was not cordial and the seemed annoyed when we asked questions
The breakfast although plentiful, was bland and pretty average.
We borrowed some plates from the restaurant to have some paninis in the room. The plates were left in the room after the next day cleaning
If you have a very early leave to get to the airport, you will probably have to pay through the eyes, as the area is poorly service by public transport.
Getting to the airport takes a long time. Leave with plenty of time.

We liked the hotel; the staff were very nice (they warned us to carry a jacket our first day) and the room was spacious, clean and modern. We slept very well, and I woke up with the ability to do a morning workout by just stepping out the doors of the hotel, which is located in the only green area of Venice. The vaporetto stop is conveniently located and you will not need to go over any bridges or travel more than two blocks from the hotel to take it. The breakfasts were great--every day they serve a large fruit bowl and these wonderful cheeses from the Veneto. The only down side is that the location makes for some long days. It's not convenient to drop off your souvenirs or rest or change before dinner because the hotel is a 20-minute walk from San Marco. I really can't think of a better place to be taking a 20-minute walk though, at any time day or night. I would stay here again.

Very close to San Marcos, at Venice, It. this Best Western hotel is nice and secluded from the tours hordes at Venice. It's very close to the Vaporetto station, the way to move around Venice. We was given the garden rooms, which are in the open and we got wet because the rain. Building needs maintenance but rooms are clean and comfortable Breakfast variety is ample and good. Near the hotel there is a small but very nice pizzeria.

Room Tip: Get the main building rooms, not the garden rooms at the outside

This hotel is located in the quite end on venice.. I'm quite impressed with the surrounding businesses but I don't think I got what I paid for to stay here. The reception staff are rude, the breakfast staff would rather be somewhere else and the hotel really doesn't have a lot to offer besides a bed. 10 euro fee on top of room service and our shower floods the bathroom.

There are no facilities at the hotel besides the restaurant and the same breakfast is served everyday.

Surprisingly enough there was an issue with my credit card paying the local tax, so I paid in cash... My friend arrived later the same evening and her credit card also had an issue and was asked to pay in cash.

The surrounding area is great.... Nice eateries and bars that are very welcoming.

I think I could have paid half the price to get better service elsewhere.

Our experience in this hotel was average at best. We stayed in hotels in Rome and Florence where the staff was very nice and helpful. Every staff person we encountered in this hotel was cold at best, some were rude. The room was nice - plenty of room and comfortable. Location is about as bad as you can get in Venice. We knew that going in, but reviews made it seem like the area around it was a nice little park worth seeing. It's about a half hour walk to St. Mark's, though the walk is at least a pleasant one along the water. All in all, it was a nice, clean, safe hotel. But the location and staff kind of ruined it. You can definitely find better.

This hotel is wonderful and I highly recommend. It is not located in the middle of the tourist area but I think that is what makes it so wonderful as you can spend the day/eve in the hustle of the tourist areas then retreat to this quiet area. It is so convenient to the vaporetto boats that come and go frequently. The hotel is nice, rooms are spacious, modern and clean, the staff is super nice and it is very English/American friendly. There is a restaurant on site and a few small convienence stores and restaurants within blocks. It is near a beautiful park and is so nice and quiet - what a difference from Saint Marks Square.
