“Great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

Great place to stay, away from the crowds of (other) turists. We stayed at Ca' Guardi which was great - especially the terrace is worth gold.

I would love to stay at Casa dei Pittori Again and can give it my very best recommendations.

Room Tip: Ca Guardi is great but look at the Pictures - the 2nd bedroom is not a master bedroom, but it was fi...

Thanks to Christiano for being such a great help. He gave us great directions to get in from the airport, and agreed to meet us at whichever stop we went to.

The apartment is spacious and comfortable, with some beautiful furniture pieces. The living room and kitchen faced a canal, where we watched many gondolas go by. The air conditioning worked well (very important, as it was brutally hot the week we were there).

If you stay here, check out the nearby piazza in the morning (Giacomo). Not over run with tourists, you can watch the locals gather and drink coffee, walk their dogs, and gossip. We were able to meet and chat with locals. We had the chance to try all the restaurants within walking distance and they were all excellent with great service.

I have to do a special thank you to Christiano, who let us stay until 7 pm in the evening the day of our departure. He had no one renting the apartment, and we didn't want to have to wander the city on a day when the humidity index was going to hit 44! Our train left late, and he let us say the whole day free of charge. Thanks!

A great experience over all.

We had a perfect stay at Casa Dei Pittori. The apartment was very comfortable, with great views of the canal. Francesco met us at the bus station and assisted us to the apartment. I would agree that it may be difficult to find initially on your own, but once you get your bearings everything is within a comfortable walk. Local supermarket and restaurants are nearby.Could easily have stayed longer.

Casa Dei Pittori
Our apartment Dimora Capovilla at Casa Dei Pittori was huge. Whichever way you are arriving into Venice, the best vaporetto stop to get off is Riva De Basio. It is about a 10 minute walk into the apartment and not too arduous with luggage. Make sure you have your map handy because you will need to negotiate your way via streets that actually go through to the area you want. Not all of them do. The apartment is situated in the historic area of Santa Croce and you will cross through Campo San Giacomo dell'Orio, a square that has retained it's original charm. There are cafes, shops, bars and a supermarket in and around the square. We were two couples traveling and each had a bedroom here. The apartment is decorated with traditional Viennese furniture, is on one of the smaller canals and you can enjoy the sight of gondolas floating by. The kitchen is well appointed if you want to have a break from dining out all the time. It was also a bonus to do a little washing as we had already been traveling for a while. There were maps for each of us and also some good guide books to look at.
Casa Dei Pittori was a 19th century palace which has been converted into apartments (7 I think) and as such the place is huge. Venice is an expensive place to stay but this was good value and a short boat ride to everything on the wonderful Vaporetti. My tip is to make sure you buy a Vaporetti pass as it is so much easier and will cover trips out to the islands as well.
Driving to Venice? Don't muck around, just bite the bullet and park as close as possible in one of the garages located at Piazzale Roma. It does seem expensive but in the long run saves time and effort.

My review contains both praise and some reservations.
We arrived in Venice on a cloudy afternoon and were met by a smiling and helpful Francesco from the Casa dei Pittori. He led us to the apartment and gave us some good hints about the local restaurants and shops. Even before we arrived, we got answers to our questions through e-mail.
The apartment met all our expectations, and we had everything we needed there. It was fun to watch the gondolas and boats on the canals from our window. The house was definitely not so easy to find on your own, but we quickly learnt our way. The whole house is impressive, and particularly the doors towards the canal were exotic!
The apartment was clean and spacious and we even had a lovely fresco on the ceiling. It was nicely renovated, with warm wooden floors in the bedrooms. It was better heated than we expected and there was always hot water, which was nice as the weather was not very warm. However, I felt a bit cold in the night, and there were not too many blankets available. The bed wasn't so great but I slept rather well nevertheless. The rest of the furniture was ok but a bit shabby. There weren't any English channels on the tv but that was not necessary either. We could also find all the necessary services and shops nearby. The Campo S. Giacomo was our favorite place as we could see local families shopping and spending their leisure time there with their children.
My reservations about the place are not related to any problems within the apartment, because everything was just fine. They are related to getting to the apartment. I had not expected the walk from the vaporetto to be quite so long and with so many bridges and steps - I travelled with my elderly mother, and she had trouble with all the steps, and having to carry a suitcase didn't help. The closest vaporetto stops are about a 10 minute walk, but with an older person it all takes longer. Also, I would not recommend this apartment for those who need to push a baby's tram or who sit in a wheelchair - but the whole Venice is challenging for these groups anyway.
All in all, I'd recommend this place warmly to people who have no problem walking and who do not carry heavy luggage. In either case, staying here may be a bit challenging, and you'd be more comfortable staying closer to a vaporetto stop.

Room Tip: All the apartments face the canal as far as I know, but I would recommend the higher floors as the v...
