We returned from 3 weeks in the Veneto region 10 days ago and we still am seething at the state of train travel for mobility challenged passengers!
The stations seemed to have no ability to assist passengers get to the platforms, get luggage and handicapped passengers on board--and it was worse when arriving at your destination. Either elevators to the platforms did not exist or did not work. If anybody with the rail system was on the platform on arrival they frequently gave incorrect or incomplete information. On the rare occasion where an elevator existed they were at the EXTREME end of the platform--adding often more than 2 city blocks of walking--pulling a suitcase!
In several instances--Venice being one of them, an office offering Handicapped assistance is on the platform--and they sent us to the wrong side of the arrival/departure platform to find a handicapped accessible rest room! And they seemed not to realize what the sign and symbol on their door was suppose to mean!
Language was not the issue, they simply did not have the capacity to assist--or seem to care.
This was our 5th trip to Europe since my stroke 11 years ago, and previously--even in Northwest Italy, people were most helpful, even taking us to the platforms in freight elevators, but not in the Veneto and adjacent Bologna.! Too bad because all other aspects of the visit worked well and the people helping us were truly gracious and helpful!
