“Great hotel full of character and friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2010

Ten of us descended on this hotel and we all had a great time. The hotel was very clean, staff friendly, food good and alcohol reasonably priced for the area. I loved the decor and the scattered eclectic mix of antiques around the hotel - so much better than a soulless modern box! Even the red dialing telephones beside the bed were a blast from the past - in a good way!

I wholeheartedly agree with the comments of the last review of Jongleurs, SouthYorkshire posted Jan 2010 and so will only add the following from our personal experience:

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and could not have been any more polite. The prices of beer and wine in the hotel were reasonable compared to the local bars.

The room we had was fairly large (although I am guessing it could have had a third bed in, hence the apparent roominess without one) and was on the first floor. The room was lovely and warm and the water always piping hot and plentiful.

The location is exactly as the previous review states but we got the bus when we didnt want to walk and broke it up on the way back with apres ski in Bar Roma - see the pictures posted for the fantastic buffet (FREE) on offer there each day.

We liked Courmayer but it was fairly quiet, albeit the week before the half term chaos (Italian and British) started and overall we were incredibly pleased with the friendliness of the Italians having holidayed in France recently it was a pleasant surprise!

The Del Viale is a traditional itialian inn which serves very good traditional italian food. It is not a large hotel chain and it does not have the trimmings of a large hotel, there is no pool, no spa facilities and no bar to speak of (It serves bottles only). But it is a very warm, homely hotel offering good service.

The Del Viale is particularly suited to mature couples. It is not suited to young people or groups of people looking to party. Neither is it particularly suitable for children as there is nothing for them to do and very little space for them to wander around in and the food may not suit children or teenagers either.

The rooms vary quite a lot and it is luck of the draw whether you get a good room or not. Some of the second floor rooms are under the eaves and this makes walking about the room at night a bit of a hazard. Some bathrooms are small with shower only but some are larger with bath tubs.

Whichever room you get they are warm, clean and towels are immaculate and changed daily. The rooms are very traditional with antique furniture which may not suit some peoples idea of a "nice room".

The hotel is about 7 mins walk from the main shopping area, the Via Roma, and another 7 mins from the main cable car. However the hotel runs mini buses in the morning and evening so you don't have to walk if you don't want to. Skis are left either at the bottom or top of the cable car and storage is included in the price of the hire, so it makes a nice walk back to the hotel after sking through the shops and bars.

Again, if you are looking to party, Courmayeur is not the place to go. There are a few bars, but they are low key.

Food in the hotel is good - meats, cheese, eggs (cold though as the kitchen does not open in the morning), cereal, yoghurts and fruit. Drinks are supplied through a very good coffee maker so it always fresh and of a good quality. Dinner at night is 4 courses with a salad buffet as well - appetiser, pasta or soup, choice of main course and choice of dessert. If there is really nothing you like on the menu they will do their best to cook you something else.

We had a very enjoyable week, the snow was perfect, sunshine nearly every day, good food and at the price we paid for the hotel, excellent value. If you pay full price for this holiday you may be a little dissappointed at the value for money.

As a previous reviewer said - Food and drink prices in the resort and on the slopes are on the high side for Italy - so beware.

This is a super little 3* hotel, located just 5 mins walk from the Via Roma in the centre of Courmayeur, and a free shuttle bus ride to the gondala which takes you direct to the slopes and ski school meeting place.

We found the hotel and the staff to be warm and friendly. The hotel was spotlessly clean, we had a room with a bath and great shower, a balcony with spectacular views, fresh linen and fluffy towels every day.

The food was traditional Italian mountain food - in the evening 4 courses of hearty and food, perfect after a long day on the slopes and a choice of courses too. Breakfast was varied - hot drinks, juice, yoghurt, fresh pastries, cereal, fruit and fresh rolls, ham and cheese. Some people made these into a packed lunch.

Courmayeur is a beautiful town, lots of pretty streets, great shops and some of the best Italian cafes I've ever been to. You have to visit Cafe della Posta, try the hot chocolate or a glass of red while warming your toes next to the huge 15th century fireplace. Or for a lunch to die for try Chiecco - just ski off the middle of the blue run next to the button lift.

Having read the previous review (after booking the hotel) we were a little concerned. However the hotel was charming and typical Italian and probably not for those looking for a full English experience. Courmayeur is a little upmarket but not at all pretentious and we'd recommend them both to anyone looking for a great quality holiday.

We have just returned from a week's skiing in Courmayeur and stayed at the Hotel Del Viale. Whilst the snow conditions and skiing we first class the hotel certainly was not.

The hotel is sold as a high standard traditional hotel, which is over 100 years old and that can certainly be said for the rooms, which might have been maintained with care and attention but are really tired and in much need of a revamp as it felt like we had stepped back into the 1950's! What was great was the warmth of the rooms and the surprisingly powerful shower, which was superb after a day on the slopes. Make sure you bring your own hairdryer though as you would have more chance in blowing your own hair dry than using those supplied in the room!

The hotel apparently also prides itself on the excellence of its food, but we can safely say we did not see that side of it at all. We were really disappointed with the fact that nothing hot was offerred for breakfast, with only cereal like cardboard and cold meat, cheeses and pastries offered which is not really what you want before heading out in the cold. The evening meal was also rather hit and miss, with the dishes often being served luke warm and with little imagination. With only around 30 guests in the hotel, we felt that this was rather poor.

A couple of good points were our resident bus driver and barman Sergio, a really genuine guy, who was always smiling and a couple of the waitresses who were really hospitable - much more so than the owner who we found to be rather grumpy and miserable like we were inconveniencing her evening, every evening!

The resort itself is lovely, but be warned bring a LOT of money as it is really for the wealthy alone. The shops are full of designer gear well out of the average punters range! Most bars charge around €6+ for a pint , €7+ for a short and €3+ for a soft drink so we found this rather shocking! The good thing is a number of the pubs (notably Poppy's and American bar) providing pizzas and mixed buffets free of charge between 4pm-7pm daily (especially great for filling up on before heading back for an uncertain evening meal at the hotel!)

On the slopes themselves there is a great variety of slopes with some good challenges for our group of 8 mixed ability skiers. We experienced no great delays on getting on any of the lifts or gondolas and found the slopes to be full of snow, well maintained and not too busy at all. Notable places for lunch include Bar Soleil at Plan Chercruit for great sandwiches, hot dogs and chips (and large cups of tea) and Le Petite Mont Blanc at the bottom of the Zerotta run - great staff and great pizza. We would suggest avoiding Christiana's, which whilst trading on its tradition and long standing in the resort, left a lot to be desired with the standard of food served and the friendliness of the staff. One basic lunch of pastas, pizzas and a drink for each of us cost €111 and they failed to come back with any change from the €120 paid over - rather rude considering they had also charged €16 in service already!

All in all we would recommend the resort (if you have money to burn at apre ski time), but suggest that you reside elsewhere!
