“lovely town and hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2011

We have just returned from lovely clean Merano and stayed in the Meranerhof Hotel. It is a lovely hotel. The food was excellent . Dinner was chosen at breakfast but this was not a problem as we usually would have chosen the same. Our first room was not as nice as we had hoped at the price as it was a bit gloomy but when we asked could we have a different one we were given several to choose from. The main problem is the traffic noise as the hotel is at a busy corner but when the windows are closed it was fairly quiet but as we like to sit on the balcony I actually bought some earplugs to wear while reading! Smallish garden again noisy but always sun loungers available and a lovely clean heated pool. Very convient to the town. Railway station about 1 mile away. Lots of walking opportunities.

Room Tip: Ask to see a different one if you don't likewhat you are offered.

I visited Merano 7 years ago and made up my mind that if I was to return it would be to a more central location. In the between years the town has changed quite significantly especially around the area in which the Meranerhof is located. The thermal baths have been renewed in modern day Italian architectural style which leaves me feeling a bit flat. There is now an noisy underpass that tapers into the road right by the hotel frontage and this is quite dangerous until you get used to it. The hotel itself is a delight; we arrived too late for dinner and a cold supper was immediately arranged. The owners are very good people who do the rounds at dinner asking their guests if they are comfortable and what they have been doing. Reception, restaurant and domestic staff are excellent. Your evening meal had to be chosen in advance, which I don't like doing but if you wanted something other than what was on offer they would offer something else. The rooms are comfortable but will soon need an overhaul. The bar area was comfortable without being very cosy. Even with the windows shut and the air-con on there is traffic noise and the drunks seem to go to the park opposite on weekend nights; there was a great deal of drunken shouting. On most nights a repeat alarm somewhere in town kept going off.

The Meranerhof offers, at first glance, all that you might want: decent, clean rooms, an elegant facade, a reasonable if not good location and splendid views, facilities like a pool, gardens, fitness room and sauna and a not bad restaurant. The Turkish bath and Finnish sauna are good and the associated showers magnificent. The rooms are a little on the small side (well the one we had was) but it had a good bathroom and a balcony so not all bad. The restaurant offers fare of consistent quality and the breakfasts are plentiful and varied. The dinner menu can be a trifle over-ambitious in terms of what goes with what but it's interesting nonetheless. However none of what is good can compensate for what is not so good. Although convenient for exploring Merano itself the hotel suffers from noise from either the road or the river (as someone has previously commented). The lounge is a little dated and this perhaps runs through the hotel itself: whilst elegant there is a touch of a by-gone age here best exemplified by the attitudes of the staff where we got the impression that they thought that the hotel was just too good for some of us. We got the feeling that they were trying to enforce values and standards more befitting the 1920s rather than those of 90 years later. The staff were a little stiff and formal and, frankly, not very friendly: there as little or no warmth nor humour amongst most of them and whilst there were exceptions these were rarities. The owner wandered around at dinner asking how folk were but (and it may be that being English we were an exception) she appeared to be just going through the motions and wasn't really interested in what we said. As such although we enjoyed our stay (7 days) it wasn't as good or as enjoyable as the previous week's hotel in Selva. Perhaps it was our expectations or our perceptions but we just didn't warm to the hotel. Would we go back? No, not just because there's plenty more to choose from but simply because we didn't feel appreciated or perhaps even wanted.

Our stay in Merano was a wonderful experience - recommended by a friend to the Meranerhof Hotel we arrived expecting to be in Italy - we were but it looked like Austria - the buildings and surrounding mountains were splendid and the whole experience most satisfying. The Hotel and Staff were of an excellent standard and the food was good and beautifully served in clean pleasant surroundings. Would I recommend a friend? I would and have and brought brochures home to hand to them. I plan to return some day and repeat the experience.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at this lovely centrally situated hotel, and as this was our second visit we knew what to expect.
Our room on the fifth floor which we specifically requested, had superb views and was truly delightful.
The quality of our meals was outstanding in all aspects and we were waited upon by extremely attentive Staff. Our whole stay was superb and relaxing and we look forward to another visit in the future.

I spent a week at this hotel at the end of July. It is not a large hotel - only 68 bedrooms - but it was one of the best hotel stays I have had in a long time. The hotel is right in the centre of Merano, overlooking the river with the mountains in the background. The reception staff are extremely welcoming and efficient, the public rooms - in particular the restaurant ( a fresh flower on every table for the whole week) - are very attractive and the whole ambience of the hotel is good. The food was excellent - from the large breakfast buffet (I did not take lunch) to the 5 course dinner in the evening. One of the proprietors of the hotel made a point of coming round to each table at dinner every evening to ask if everything was all right, were they enjoying themselves etc. etc. A nice touch...

My room was extremely comfortable and the bathroom couldn't be faulted. Both were kept spotless the whole week.

There is a garden for sunbathing at the back of the hotel together with a large covered swimming pool.

It is difficult to find anything negative to say about this hotel. The only thing that is perhaps worth mentioning is that if you stay at the front of the hotel there is a certain amount of rushing water noise coming from the river . Also, because the hotel has a corner position by a bridge there is a small amount of traffic noise. But don't let that stop you staying here - the hotel is in a wonderful position and the plusses far, far outweigh this minor negative comment!!

  • Liked — A civilised, welcoming hotel.
