Owner description: The Museo delle Antichità Egizie is the only museum other than the Cairo Museum that is dedicated solely to Egyptian art and culture. Many international scholars, since the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphs Jean-François Champollion, who came to Turin in 1824, spend much time pouring over the collections. It was Champollion who famously wrote, “The road to Memphis and Thebes passes through Turin”.The collections that make up today’s Museum, were enlarged by the excavations conducted in Egypt by the Museum’s archaeological mission between 1900 and 1935 (a period when finds were divided between the excavators and Egypt). The Egyptian Museum in Turin has begun 2009 an important project which wants to widen spaces in order to enhance the collections through modern museographical and museological criteria. The Museum will be open all over the period of restoration and the New Egyptian Museum inauguration is scheduled for the year 2015.

This is a big museum with a great collection, we spent a few hours wondering through and would recommend it to those who are in Turin.

“Fascinating”

Fascinating museum. Not as big as I expected, but the detail and range of artefacts was well worth seeing.

“astonishing collection of egyptian archeological artifacts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

When visiting the museum it becomes immediately obvious that this is indeed the most important museum on egyptian archeology besides the Cairo one. The number of exhibition galleries is however rather limited, and this raises the question which (limited) fraction of the vaste museum collection is actually on display. An expansion of the occupied floor space would be recommendable - the required construction works to accomplish this seem to be ongoing ...

“Fabulous museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013 via mobile

If you like Egyptian history and art, you should not miss this fantastic museum! I would rank this museum equally interesting compared to other great museums dedicated to Egypt I have visited before (e.g. Pergamon, Berlin; The Met in NYC; the British Museum in London). It only focuses on Egyptian art.
The museum is currently renovating and hopes to re-open in a new format in 2015, but the exhibition has been set up in a perfect way to avoid any inconvenience of these works.
The museum counts three main parts. The first big exhibition room in the basement (perfectly airconditioned) will really blow you away with its fabulous collection of Egyptian artefacts. After having passed through a temporary warehouse of mummies, you will enter the section with the stuff that has been excavated when discovering the tomb of Kha. Very interesting, but pretty hot area. The last part shows a series of well-conserved Egyptian statues (the one of Ramses II) and sarcofages.
Conclusion: a must see in Torino. Ticket price was €7.5 per person, but good value for the money. Don't miss it!
