“The boat ride is 3/4 the fun”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

Isola San Giulio is little more than a church and a single path around the island less than 200m in length. The path is called the "Path of Silence" and has little sayings every 25 m about the virtues of silence. We think it was just a ploy by the residents to try to curb the noise created by the scores of visitors who taxi over each day. It didn't work. Most of the (primarily Italian) tourists we encountered were content to jabber with one another or on their cell phones the entire circuit.

The church is small, but very picturesque and interesting. Go early and do the circuit first while most go into the church. You may have the path in silence after all and if you get to the church before the next water taxi lands, you can have the church to yourself too!

“Interesting for a brief visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2012

The little island deserves a visit, though fifteen minutes in the church and fifteen more minutes walking the available paths on the island will cover the visit. 5 minute boat ride to and from the village.

Definitely worth a visit. The old monastry is interesting as are the small shops and narrow streets of the island

“Ancient Island - Great for Photos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

This is an ancient village on an island - only accessible by boat. Only one restaurant and maybe one shop. A few inhabitants - but lots of great old buildings. Best viewed from the shores of Orta San Giulia if you want lots of excitement in your life. But if you enjoy getting lost with your camera in an environment that hasn't changed for centuries, this is your spot. Take the water taxi from Orta San Giulia - its a quick trip. You can walk the whole island in about 15 minutes if you aren't stopping for photos.
