“Good hotel - a little pricey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

Room booked was a "deluxe" room for three days in the first half of Feb 2014 and for two people (as opposed to a "standard"). The price for the deluxe room was 153 euros per night and I was told this was discounted from 208 euros (for the standard room I was quoted 113 euros and told it was discounted from 178). Based on other tripadvisor reviews it appears each deluxe room is furnished and decorated differently. Ours was room 207 which had at least one previous bad review. This room was not so bad. The main problem is a small bathroom with a total of three doors to contend with (two of them were shower doors). This made its use a bit clumsy. There was a big bathtub separate from the shower/toilet area. There were nice towels and thick robes in the room. The bed was enclosed in a sort of glass box: glass walls within the room from floor to ceiling as well as glass doors. It was interesting and did not bother us. This room had hardwood floors. The room rate included wifi and breakfast. The wifi has a strong password given to you on a ticket that expires 24 hours from first use. You can ask for multiple tickets. It needed to be reentered again frequently due to auto logouts. The wifi connection was slow. Breakfast was good with fresh brioches, cheese, cold cuts, cereal, fruit etc). Coffee was made with a real espresso maker (versus an automatic self service machine- although there was one there in the breakfast room). Reception staff was friendly and accommodating. On the last day we checked out at checkout time (11am) and missed breakfast. We were asked (possibly by the owner or manager) if we would like a coffee and brioche while we waited in the lobby. This was impressive to me. There are a few hotels in Pavia to choose from. You can get a basic room with wifi and breakfast for a lot less at some nearby hotels. The Hotel Moderno is probably the nicest but it may not be worth the extra expense. Tips from a frequent Italy and Pavia visitor: wifi is slow in most of the hotels I have been to in Italy; if possible I usually pass on spending extra for breakfast and opt to go to a coffee bar to eat breakfast like an Italian (for usually less than 3 euros); do not expect the air conditioning to be very cold; do not expect the air conditioner to be available year round; do not expect the heater to be available year round; in Italy the price changes based on one or two person occupancy so book accordingly- you will be charged a supplement if someone extra shows up for a room booked for one person; it is normal to be asked to hand over your passports upon check-in;

The hotel Moderno is excellently located - walking distance to the city centre and just across the railway station, and walking disatnce from the covered bridge across the stream. The hotel looks small from outside but is relatively big inside - many rooms along a narrow corridor. I stayed in Room 202 - nice reasonably large and comfortable although I wished the working table were a bit wider to accommodate my laptop. The queen size bed was in fact two single beds put together with a gap in between. Otherwise, it is well furnished and well decorated. The window opens in a courtyard - not particularly pleasant.
I liked the wavering staircase which I used. The lift is extremely slow - you seem to wait for ages if you want to go down.
The breakfast is good but without any omelets. They can give espresso or cappuccino on demand. The wifi is free: unfortunately one has to ask for a new password every 24 hours - very clumsy. and ofThe connection is at a reasonable speed.
The hotel has a luggage room should you have to leave your luggage due to a late light.
The front desk staff members are friendly.

This hotel is located right across the railway station piazza. It is labelled as 4 stars, which is probably a bit overrated, probably more a 3 stars. It has most of the basic services: small bar, free wifi, free breakfast and restaurant. The free breakfast is not stunning: edible, and they serve machine instant coffee: a shame for Italy ! . The restaurant offers very good Italian cuisine, huge plates at good prices. Just be aware that it doesnt seem to be part of the hotel, so you cannot charge to your room (and Amex currently not accepted). The rooms are not big, but large enough, and somewhat basically furnished and decorated, but everything needed is there and clean (bathrobes and slippers provided). The staff is very charming and helpful. Hotel certainly to consider for a stay in Pavia, if you dont expect luxury.

This is a friendly hotel just opposite the railway station in the attractive town of Pavia. I stayed here for three nights with a group of people attending a meeting. I have never understood how rooms are allocated, but for whatever reason I was handed the keys to room 127. This room had the qualities described by some previous reviewers - dark, small, tiny shower-room with rusting fittings. No view, and noisy. So noisy, that whenever guests in other rooms flushed their toilets the sound of rushing water was very loud in this room - and continued intermittently throughout the night - so not a good night sleep.
When my colleagues raved about their rooms - marble fittings, spacious, lovely were all words used - they could have been talking about a different hotel.
Such a disappointment, and why have such variable rooms when they are charging the same price to people. Is it pot luck, or do guests get randomly allocated to rooms? Either way, avoid room 127 at all costs.
Wi-fi in the small bar area is free, but slow. It is also possible to use the computer and printer in the bar area to print out your airline boarding pass. I would go again, but insist on one of the good rooms, I know they have them.

Room Tip: avoid room 127

We spent one night at the Moderno and we were disappointed. Our room, 207, was chopped up. The bedroom area was inside a glass walled cubicle. The central light switch was outside the sleeping area which meant you either turned off the lights and went to bed or got out of bed and turned them off. The toilet-basin bathroom measured 1 meter and 47 centimetres by 1 meter and 33 centimetres (1.47 x 1.33) too small for two normal adults. The shower stall opened into the tub area and the toilet area. If you walked from the tub area into the bathroom you either walked through the shower stall into the bathroom or you walked the full distance around the room, past the front door, and into the toilet. The shower stall doors leaked into the tub area. The set up was inherently unsafe. WiFi connection in the room costs Euro 13 per 24 hours but there was free access in the lobby which meant at peak times there were a lot of people crunching away. The breakfast buffet was minimalist. We would have been better off to have stopped outside the hotel for a croissant and coffee. The touch button coffee machine was out of water, one of the cereal dispensers didn't work, and a tepid hotplate of cooked eggs and sausage floating in water was not terribly inviting. We paid Euro 176 for lodging and breakfast. We have stayed at better hotels: rooms, free WiFi and breakfast for far less. The front desk service was helpful and we were able to park in front of the hotel. Whitebeard83

I stayed here for three nights while attending a meeting. The hotel is rather quaint and reminiscent of a 19th century hotel with decent sized rooms, a pleasant lobby and free wi-fi in the reception area. I had a good room with a sweet little balcony overlooking the main road but there was a plastic cup full of cigarette butts on the balcony and this remained for the whole of my stay!The breakfast was acceptable but nothing special.The wi-fi was very slow and intermittent. The staff, however, were pleasant and helpful. All in all I had mixed feelings about this hotel.

Room Tip: I liked my room 213. I would have liked it even more had the plastic cup full of cigarette butts bee...

After a long day's travelling we arrived exhausted at Pavia by train from Milan. We were delighted to find this hotel is very close to the station. A nice tree-lined street leads to the main parts of this very pleasant Italian town. The post office is very close, and we were able to walk to the major historical landmarks and the market. The hotel is surprisingly luxurious: leather lounge, monogrammed towels, a full range of excellent toiletries, slippers etc., very good plumbing. We were able to get dinner in the small dining room, which also served an adequate breakfast. There was a free computer available in the foyer. The lobby is attractive and the staff were pleasant and helpful.
There were no negatives really. We were there for a scientific conference and dinner which went off well, but the visit to Pavia was an unexpectedly pleasant interlude.
