Town House Galleria – A Seven Star Experience
Few words can really describe the experience I recently had at this relatively new and unknown hotel. Although open since March 2007, and a part of the Leading Small Hotels of the World affiliation, few are aware of its existence. It is my understanding that there is only one other 7 star hotel in the world - the Sail located in Dubai.
Since this was my first 7 star hotel, I have nothing to compare it to other than previous 5 star experiences. With only 24 suites, it should not be considered a business hotel even though it is perfectly located in the heart of the old historic city and adjacent of the high-end fashion and financial districts. However, if you are royalty, a “C” level executive, professional athlete, rock star, fashion maven or an up and coming master of the universe, this is the destination! Be sure to request the Bentley car service from the train station or airport. A few things to note: there is no gym, pool, spa or lobby bar so hanging out hoping to meet someone famous is highly unlikely. This place is all about privacy and discretion. There are no room keys - access to the hotel and your suite is done through your own personal security code. You may also select your type of linens, newspaper, pillow and shoe size as they will have shoe trees available for your Prada’s and Ferragamo’s. Complimentary pressing and unpacking are available from your Butler. Additionally, there was always fresh ice and hot water refreshed several times a day. Any home away from home should come with personal (24 hour) Butler service, impeccable furnishings/technology and top shelf bath amenities.
Upon arrival, our suite orientation was performed by Vito Lazzazzara, Head Butler. Because there is so much to digest, this introduction took almost 30 minutes. Part of this time was spent demonstrating all the high tech goodies in our suite. A brief list included: a VAIO leather bound laptop with complimentary high speed internet, two flat screen TV monitors complete with cable and satellite capabilities, a wine fridge stocked with the finest vintage champagnes, whites and reds. A mini bar stocked with all the essentials plus a few special international treats. The in-suite cappuccino/espresso machine produced flawless shots of espresso or a full cup of your favorite mix/strength preference.
The hotel is perfectly located at the Galleria Vitorio Emmanuelle - a 2 minute walk next door to the famed Duomo and the world renowned La Scala Opera House. The financial and fashion districts are a 5 minute walk. Other sites and points of interest are within a 10 minute cab ride.
On this particular trip, we asked our other Butler (Barbara) to arrange a private tour with an English speaking guide. Although a little pricey – almost 500 Euro it was well worth it. She was able to secure access to the Last Supper (not to be missed) at the last minute and supposedly sold out for the day therefore I felt the tour price justified and well worth it.
Barbara also made arrangements for us to visit a spa for a few hours of massage, steam and sauna. Not to take anything away from the hotel or Barbara, however our spa experience was not a positive one and the recommended Caroli Spa and Gym provided a less than average experience.
In conclusion, if you can afford the Town House Galleria and want to see Milan (a wonderful city contrary to what they all say) I would encourage a stay at this wonderful home away from home.
