“Old but calm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013 via mobile

Came here by a random walk during a heat day, stunned by the ancient breath, calmmed by the space and time. Some concerts happening in this old church.

“How churches once were”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

One of the few remain examples of a church with a entrance large atrium, which were common on the Middle Ages. Worth visiting for the many styles to be found in its decoration and also for the crypt

“Surprised by Celtic influence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

The basilica is stunningly old. What surprised me however, was the extensive use of Celtic knot decoration on the capitals and incidental stonework around doors and windows. Knots and ribbon patterns are used extensively throughout the basilica. Ambrose and two saints (or rather their skeletons) are visible under the high alter - a surprise if you aren't expecting it. Interpretive information is well done in Italian and English.

“Old”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

A very quiet church. And so old, dating back to the 4th century! Off the beaten track, but worth a visit.

“Unexpected Beauty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

The interior of this church is so light and bright, much nicer and more atmospheric than the Duomo. Just to sit and look at the stilicone sarcophagus under the pulpit, the beautiful gold altarpiece and the painted ceiling and mosaics is breathtaking, you certainly feel that you are in a church. In the crypt are the relics of St Ambrose and two martyrs, Gervasius and Protasius, and for 1 euro you can see the treasures of St Ambrose.
