Nicola and Matteo were very friendly and helpful. They made me feel very welcome. My room was on the top floor overlooking the courtyard. It was light, airy, clean, modern and very peaceful. I felt I was on holiday from the moment I landed in Italy, but really felt relaxed the moment I entered the main doorway to the hotel. My room proved to be home away from home.
It took 1.5 hours to reach the hotel from Milan Linate airport by public transport, which was not bad at all. Although situated in the suburbs of Milan, the hotel is a short walk from a main line station that takes you directly into the centre of the city with ease.
Nicola advised me on the best travel ticket to purchase for my stay, and kindly suggested places to visit. I told him of all the excursions and events I had in mind and he suggested what could be realistically achieved in the time that I had. Incredibly informative and helpful.
On the afternoon of my arrival, I rushed out again to attend my pre-booked viewing of The Last Supper (pre-booking essential), did a little shopping and had lunch. There was time to return to the hotel to relax and freshen up before heading out again to La Scala in the evening.
I spent the next morning at the Pappiniano street market, which exhausted my attempts to walk the length of it. I bought many bargain items (e.g. lovely linen top 3 euros, silk scarf 5 euros, lace top stockings 2 euros a pair). The market also has an excellent display of fresh meat, fish, fruit and veg at one end. There is plenty to eat from lunch stalls. I also spent time inside the stunning Duomo.
Later in the day, Nicola suggested an easy walking route that would eventually take me to the lovely Navigli district, which is lined with restaurants.
With Nicola's help, I saw so much more of the city in my brief two-night stay.
Being a city girl, returning to the hotel late at night did not seem a daunting prospect, although I was a bit wary upon leaving the main street to walk along the road to the hotel door. The quietness of the mostly residential neighbourhood at such an hour may feel a little unsettling to a solo female traveller. However I experienced no problems at all.
I should also add that the rest of the street was very presentable and well lit in the evenings.
I had an early return flight the next day. Nicola had all the paperwork ready for check-out. He also booked my taxi and left a large breakfast box of foods for my trip, which was handy and unexpected.
A very pleasant experience - I would happily return to Il Girasole.
There are shops dotted about in the vicinity of the hotel such as bakeries selling pastries and slices of pizza, the odd bar, cafe and a Lidl type supermarket where you can buy small bottles of mineral water for 25 cents each.
