I am on the road for 5 months of the year either for business or pleasure and spend about 4 months in Milan and always at 5 star properties. With all the recent hype surrounding the opening of The Armani Hotel, I decided to check it out.
I am currently staying at a competitor not too far away.
On my arrival at the hotel a few days ago from the office with my work bags in tow, as I stood outside the main entrance, I did not know if it was an automatic door or one had to open the door as there were no signs (very discreet indeed) or handles to push the door open. No door man in sight. But I finally realized that you had to push open the door.
Went up to reception and met several staff members who were very cordial as I had known them from their pervious place of employment. The Life Style Manager was kind enough to show me a selection of rooms which are very large for Milan standards and very well appointed. The hotel is indeed quite impressive.
After our tour, I went to the bar to meet some friends for a drink. This is where all hell broke loose. I was offered a cocktail which arrived in a reasonable amount of time. When my friends arrived, they placed their order and after 15 minutes their orders had still not arrived. The bar did not appear to be busy , there just seemed to be a shortage of staff and more importantly bartenders. After the drinks arrived, it took another 10 minutes for some hors d'oeuvres to be served. For 5 of us we were served 2 toast squares, one tray of an assortment of nuts and olives. Some other tables seemed to be served a better assortment, but our waiter perhaps just forgot to service our table. For 20 euro a pop I do believe guests can be offered a better assortment. No napkins were placed on the table and when I asked for some after sometime, we were brought 5 tissue napkins. When we had finishedour drinks no one asked us if we wanted another round.
When my friends mentioned to the F & B Manager (whom they knew) about the service his calm reply was " ci sono cose da fare " (roughly translated there are things that need to be done)
When we were ready to leave, I asked for my coat which took another 15 minutes to be located.
It is quite shocking that a newly opened 5 star property should have such a lack of attention to detail, especially when there are so many competitors in the neighborhood. Is it resting on the laurels of the NAME ?????
I certainly will not return or recommend it to friends or consider staying at the property after this fiasco. It's early days yet but this ship deserves a quick wake up call to prevent it from sinking.
