Not many travelers seek out adventures in cemeteries during their trips, but this particular one is a must if you love art and are not creeped out by cemeteries. If you plan on spending a couple of days in Milan, I would suggest getting the main attractions in the city out of the way first and take an afternoon scroll through Monumental Cemetery. The grounds are well-kept and the walls have been built into a cremation memorial. Inside, maps are posted throughout the area with color photos of some of the more exquisite tombs and memorials. Within the cemetery are many intricate sculptures and impressive mausoleums dedicated to important Italians and one can also see how the modern-day wealthy have chosen to repose. My personal favorite is a square-shaped tomb inscribed with the Italian word for goodbye, "arrivederci." The best thing besides the tranquility and art is that it's free. Buon viaggio!
