After finding this hotel in the 'Rough Guide to Italy' (usually a very reliable source for finding good quality accommodation) I was looking forward to as the guide puts it 'a quietly elegant' hotel with 'individually decorated rooms and good quality service'. Our arrival there furthered this expectation as the reception area is lovely and the staff member who greeted us was polite and helpful. We decided to stay in a roof terrace room for two nights at the price they quoted us to start with of 200 Euros per night. The rooms are located a little way from reception in a seperate building, a nice touch as it feels like you are staying in real Milan with your own front door keys and elevator too. Although the room was clean and bright there was no sense of any 'individual decoration' and with one of two cupboard doors missing, a flimsy iron bedstead and quite a few broken plastic blinds in the room, I felt my expectations had not been met. The roof terrace was a good size although more of a balcony and joined with our neighbours 'terrace' too so there was no sense of privacy. Our first night there was nice and as far as location was concerned the hotel is brilliantly placed to walk right out into central Milan. We didn't take breakfast after seeing our neighbours were charged 10 euros for a couple of croissants and some tea. Instead we went out and ate twice as much in a lovely cafe around the corner for half the price. If you have already booked your stay here this is probably where you'll want to stop reading because our second nights stay at the hotel was a big let down. We awoke very early in the morning to find rain from a passing storm overhead leaking though the ceiling onto our bed and our clothes and also coming up through the floor, in both places leaving huge puddles. Reception were phoned quickly and although a maid came to put towels down on the floor, nothing else was done and no appology was offered. To make matters worse, when we had packed our wet items of clothing and when dawn broke so we could check out downstairs, the lady at the desk was so exceptionally rude that it almost spoilt our whole stay there. We were unhappy to pay the full 200 euros for half a nights sleep and a wet selection of clothing, not unjust if you ask me and not something I have ever needed to do at a hotel before. After thoroughly dismissing anything we had to say with her words 'I will not discount for a small puddle of water and some lost sleep' and without any hint of an appology we were so peeved with the hotel that we left and will not be going back anytime soon. Perhaps if someone with people-skills and a nice manner had greeted us that morning and appologised for the state of the room I could just laugh it off as certainly a real milanese experience but she was so unpleasant that it really impacted our stay there.
