The Westin Milano is presently going through a renovation process that regarded the first 4 floors, so far. The others are still furnitured in the style of the Aga Khan's times -i.e. empire/victorian style furnitures and walls/ceilings decoration. The new ones seemed highly elegant, probably going more towards simplified decorations.
The entrance hall and the adjacent bar lounge are a fine combination of light and warm, homy atmosphere -truly pleasant. Something like Ritz-Carlton, but warmer.
Location: between train station and city center. To be remarked the fact that you can get to the fashion district walking 10-15 minutes through the city park (early '800 style, very nice). It's not that you step out and find options for dinner (while at lunch time it's a rather lively area, during the week).
Room: I got a comfort room, with view to the center skyline -definitely nice, spacious, clean. Small sings of aging, but all you'd expect from a Westin is there. The bathroom was particularly comfortable, with very fine green marble decoration. Heavenly bed and lights are to be mentioned as part of the nice stay I had.
Service: at the entrance door, the "L" beside the five stars is the reason of a superior treatment. In all the Westins I have been to so far, I noticed a something personal in the way I was served.
It must be something the management identified and pursued as a target. When I go to Hiltons, there's no doubt kindness and formality, but I get the feeling of being perceived by personnel like anonimous kattle passing through check points.
I would rate the service at Westin Palace at the top of what I experienced in Italy so far (the prior-to-arrival email is to me part of this attention to the Customer I appreciated).
Other notes: lounge bar is nice, car park is adjacent, roof terrace bar a plus for warm seasons.
I'd conclude stating that in Milan either you go to Old Buildings transformed into Hotels or you go to '900 buildings meant to by hotels from foundation. There are good sides in both choices. Westin belongs to the latter kind and decoration, furnituring, lights created something truly pleasant.
City center view, high floors for best scenario. The first 4 floors are the newly renovated ones.
