“Great hotel.”

Central location near train station, and close to bus and tram stops. Nice clean room, great bathroom, best bath I've had in years!!! Bar has free snacks in the evening. Breakfast room is a little small and crowded, but ok.
Helpful staff. Would stay here again.

Due to a pilot strike, the airline rebooked us from a Rome departure to Milan for the next morning. Not having counted on visiting Milan, we had just a few hours on the train to find a place to overnight. Going through the long list of Milan hotels, we chose Hotel Berna
for 2 reasons, the proximity to the Central Train station and it is 100% smoke free. For once, rate was actually a secondary consideration.
There were 4 of us traveling so we booked 2 double rooms. As it turned out, it was an excellent choice for us. Within moments of booking, we received a welcome email and confirmation. When we arrived an hour later, the staff at the reception desk had our rooms ready and check-in was uneventful.
The rooms were well appointed and the bedding very comfortable. It was early December and chilly outside so a slight opening of the window kept the temperature in the room just right to our liking. The free Wi-Fi worked perfectly and the channel line-up on the TV had something for everybody. We asked the front desk for a local restaurant recommendation and were referred to Mama Rosa’s. Excellent meal as well. The breakfast buffet opens up at 6:30am,
allowing for a great start to our travel day. The selection was full of choices of both hot and cold foods. They even have a juicer where you can blend fresh carrot juice.
I considered the rate a good value for the comfort and amenities this hotel offers. I would gladly stay there on any future trip to Milan.

Room Tip: For travel to/from Malpensa International airport, we used the Malpensa Shuttle bus service that dep...

We spent one night at hotel berna at the end of a month long trip around Europe as reviews in TripAdvisor were very positive.

Positive notes - good service from staff, very convenient location next to the train station, not all that pricey, free non alcoholic minibar.

Negative notes - room reeked of smoke on arrival. All of our clothes stank by the time we left. How is this not noticed in a smoke free hotel? Neighbourhood was not pretty - although that's the price you pay for being close to the station. Room was small and was certainly the worst 4 star room I've ever seen.

Overall, convenient but not comfortable. We couldn't see how it had such a high TripAdvisor rating.

Customerrelationship, General Manager at Hotel Berna, responded to this review, yesterday
Dear Giblet1231,

Thank you for reviewing Hotel Berna.

I’m saddened to read that you found the hotel to be overrated. We realize that, being rated between the first hotels in Milan, expectations may run too high and it becomes more and more difficult to surprise and satisfy our beloved guests.

With regard to your room, we are a small family run hotel and invest a lot to renovate every year many of our rooms in order to serve better our customers. We offer 3 different room categories for double occupancy (Comfort double, Quality double and Superior double) which vary in size, furniture, upholstery and amenities. If informed, the reception staff could have shown you – for just a small supplement – some of our upper categories.

We apologise for the smell of smoke, we are a 100% non smoking hotel and try hard to make all our guests respect this policy. We wish you would have only reported this issue to the staff and we would have gladly changed your room.

We are indeed very glad you appreciated our location, which makes us a perfect base for visiting Milan, as well as our free non alcoholic minibar, a small sign to thank our guest for choosing us.

But in particular we are very grateful for your comment and appreciations on our hospitality and friendly service.

Please give us another chance to show you we are value for money.

Best regards,

Carlo Fontana, GM & Staff

I spent a happy holiday enjoyed in the city of Milan, and I would like to thank you for the hospitality during my stay. Thanks to Badr, Valeria, Alessandra, Paolo, Andrea and all the staff at the hotel for the good treatment, and I apologize that I did not mention the rest of the names, and special thanks to Stefano for helping me in all things and for his advice, which benefited from during my trip, if I will be visiting Milan again, my stay will be at the Hotel Berna, as I have put the hotel name within the recommended hotels in the company I work with, thank to them because you made beautiful memory of my trip

I really would go 3.5 here. First of all the rooms are small and if you order online be sure and specify one "king". By "king" I mean they push 2 beds together. The nicer hotels have true king beds. Also, there is no A/C.. so opening the window is the only way to cool off. A decent hotel. We chose this one because of its proximity to the train station. The location is a bit far away from the main areas and with the rain it was a pain. Lucky for us we were only there 2 nights. My advice: Pick a little nicer of a hotel that is closer to the nicer restaurants and such. Just take a cab from the train station to the hotel. If you do end up staying here be sure and eat the buffet!

This hotel is a block away from Central Train Station and was perfect for over night stay. It's nice, clean and offer several different types of rooms depending on your needs. I would definitely stay here again next time I'm in Milan.

Very polite and quick check in, service was good all over the hotel. Rooms are clean and comfortable. You can pick your pillows among three different types and non-alcoholic drinks before the arrival, latter are free of charge. Strong and quick wifi in the rooms.
Security is good, we were staying in the building across the street where no strangers can enter.
Very nice breakfast with lot of fresh fruits, bakery, cheese, eggs, yoghurt. Good selection of teas and you can order coffee according to your taste. Fresh carrot fruit is very nice extra.
Location is just 5 minutes from Milano Centrale railway station where the trains from airport arrive. Metro stop is near, others it takes 25 minutes to walk to the Duomo.
In general quiet hotel but there is new construction going on across the street where working begins very early in the morning on weekdays.
