When you arrive at nearly midnight and you've been travelling for more than 10 hours, what you want is a friendly welcome, a smile and a cool, clean room. This is precisely what we had on arrival at this lovely little hotel.
We stayed one night in the "basic" room, which whilst slightly old-fashioned, was immaculately clean with good bed linen, free soft drink mini bar, a clean bathroom and air conditioning. Due to circumstances beyond our control, our holiday was delayed and we had to stay another night at a moment's notice. We paid somewhat more than our previous deal (to be expected), but we were shown two different rooms so that we could be sure of our choice and we stayed in the "superior" rooms area of the hotel. These appear to be recently modernised and are larger, have wood laminate floors, simple furniture and larger bathrooms with plain white suites. Ours had twin beds, a window on to a courtyard with shutters, net and curtains as well as a bathroom with loo, bidet, wash hand basin and bath tub with a shower mounted on the wall and a glass screen. It was a powerful and pleasant shower with a little more room than the basic room version.
Breakfast is a classic continental buffet with some service for teas and coffees. Everything from boiled eggs, ham, croissants to fruit, waffles, toast and scrambled eggs! Lots of drinks including water, tea, juice, coffee and hot chocolate (machine made) with charming staff.
The Reception staff and cleaners were all incredibly polite, warm, friendly and helpful and we had reason to ask them for much more help than usual due to our delayed holiday. They were a joy to deal with and made our awful experience so much better. Hotel Berna started our holiday and made a real impression.
Ideally situated near to Milano Centrale, we walked with no problems at 23h45 on a Friday in August. The railway station is large and easy to navigate as well as being the location for Airport Shuttle buses to all the Milan airports. It is also easy to walk to the underground and very easy therefore to get around. A few restaurants nearby, but this isn't somewhere I would choose to stay for a long period to walk around in the evening as it is a quiet residential area and there are a few massage parlours around, which make it seem seedier than it probably is. We certainly saw no trouble, were never hassled and felt quite safe.
The Hotel Berna is a clean, friendly hotel in a convenient location and is probably the best stop-over hotel in Milan - the staff and family-run feel make this a real gem.
