As far as I'm concerned the Principe di Savoia is without a doubt, and by far, the best Hotel in Milan. We had booked a room for 3 nights and after a trip to Venice and Monte Carlo decided to spend one more night at the hotel before our flight. Since our arrival we were impressed by the scenographic entrance on top of a small hill in Piazza della Repubblica and by the dramatic white facade dominating the square. The front door staff was very kind, prompt and efficient. Our luggage was labeled with elegant paper tags, bearing the gilded Hotel logo. I had the pleasure to see the lobby in other occasions before, but it still impressed me for its grand yet warm and welcoming feeling. The Reception desk formalities were very, very fast. The receptionist, standing behind an exquisite bouiserie decorated counter, was also very kind and looked into our eyes while addressing us. A male receptionist wearing an impeccable 3 pieces uniform escorted us to our room and introduced each function properly. Luggage arrived soon after. On our way to the room I had the pleasure of being enchanted by the unparalleled class of the interior decoration of the Hotel. The elevators revealed an early 20th century charm. When the elevator doors opened on the rooms corridor we were welcomed by a sublime perfume, diffused by a glass vase on a table. Walking through the corridor I was overwhelmed by the richness of the decoration of every single wood door, by the beauty of the gilded floral decorated handles, by the attention paid in covering each single heater of the corridor with custom made bouiserie, and by the quality of the carpeting. The room and the bathroom were impeccable. Right space, elegant bouiserie furniture, good tapestry and curtains, comfortable seating, proper lighting solutions, fine quality toiletries and bathrobes. I suggest to book a mosaic room. We tried a blue themed one when we returned to the Hotel after 4 days and were enchanted.
The first night we arrived pretty late so we just had champagne in the Principe Bar. The service was spotless and the environment luxurious. I particularly liked the sofa chairs covered in tweed and wool fabrics.
In the early morning we enjoyed the pool and the gym. The top floor spa is very elegant, especially the classic changing rooms decoration, and service was prompt and up to standard. The pool is a bit small to swim but we shouldn't forget this is a 1900's building. A flowered terrace overlooking Milan surrounds the whole space giving you a feeling of openness and relaxation. Bathrobes are of an exquisite quality and complementary fruit and water are properly displayed in the corridor.
Breakfast was beyond expectations. Everything was perfect. The maître greeted us on our arrival in the dining room. We were seated properly and promptly served coffee and tea. Our large round table was overlooking the garden and the fountain. Table cloth and napkins were of a quality that is very difficult to find in Hotels nowadays. Fresh, wet garden roses discretely seduced our eyes from a small crystal vase. The maître and the staff had exquisite manners and attitude. The buffet was of high quality, abundance and variety as well as properly presented. Circulation was perfect, avoiding overcrowding. Everything you could possibly wish to have for breakfast was there, countless kinds of fruit, bread and beverage, the sweetest cream croissants, the best ham, more typologies of nuts and cereals than you would even recognize. I was particularly impressed by the quality of flatware, glassware and cutlery, especially the decoration of plates and cups. 10 cum laude was my final judgement.
We were positively surprised to find out about the complementary chauffeur limousine service that every 15 minutes takes you to the 20 minutes walk away Piazza della Scala and other city center stops.
We did quite a lot of shopping and sent several bags back to the hotel. Each bag was later properly delivered to our room by attentive porters that treated items with care, included a precious evening dress we left in the deposit to collect on our return to Milan, for which all my instructions were followed by the letter.
I used the business center once and were satisfied. During our 4 days there I was served by all the concierge staff and was never disappointed. One night I forgot my phone on a taxi taken at the hotel. I called the hotel to ask if the taxi could be traced. Unfortunately I hadn't asked the doorman to get it for me, so there was no record, but while I was stil out for dinner, the Concierge offered to contact all major taxi companies to make the announcement. We couldn't find the phone but I really appreciated the effort. The last night we had a late dinner at Il Salotto. Service was attentive and food delicious. In the hotel most staff addressed me with my last name which I really appreciated. My only suggestion is to improve the quality of uniforms and shoes for front door staff and porters. I suggest better fabric, tailored uniforms. Maître, Concierge and Reception staff were impeccably dressed. I'm very difficult to satisfy and very rarely make such an endorsement. But it's well deserved. If you are simply looking for the best, stay at the Principe di Savoia.
Book a mosaic room. You won't regret the extra cost.
