This was is an amazing place. Rocco is so enthusiastic about art and its place in society. His explanation of the work on the ceiling telling the story of the Prodigal Son was almost like listening to a preacher from the Reformation. His spoke in Italian but he spoke slowly and clearly so I was able to follow most of it. Thanks to the presence of a very nice visitor from Venice most of the gaps were filled in. The level of decoration of the rooms was like something from a lavish film set.
The transformation of the undercroft was an amazing surprise. This is the sort of place that makes visting Italy so worthwhile.
Of course there is plenty to see in Mantova and it is so easy to get around. Even the sudden and for us unexpected arrival of snow only added to the magic.
I hope to return here in the near future.
Many thanks to Rocco and his family.
