“Wonderful hotel on Lake Maggiore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

This is our second visit to La Palma and we enjoyed it even more than our first. A beautiful hotel with excellent service, beautiful surrounds and amazing views across to Isola Bella. The hotel is within easy (though steep!) walking distance from the railway station and the main town centre. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a corner suite on the 6th floor. The breakfast buffet is excellent, the restaurant serves good food, with a good salad and dessert bar. Only things we would change would be to add tea and coffee making facilities and free wi-fi. Otherwise, we had a wonderful four days here and cant wait to return.

Room Tip: Go for broke, and ask for a room facing the lake.

Had booked a side lake view room, which was great. Beautiful view of Isola Bella. Comfortable room with large bathroom. Breakfast buffet had a great choice and the waiters were helpful. Reception staff very attentive and spoke excellent English.
Hotel has an underground car park as well as parking in vacant ground across the road.
Short walk to the Lake ferry boats as well as into Stresa centre where there are lots of restaurants. Also it is a short walk to the cable car station.
Best thing about the hotel is its rooftop terrace with small pool and bar. It is GORGEOUS! To sit there watching the sun go down over the lake with a cool drink is unforgettable.
Will go back there again ASAP.

Room Tip: Request a room on a high floor to get the best views

Had a wonderful holiday with jewels coach tours which booked in at above hotel. Rooms were excellent food was also delicious and plenty of it. Table service was good staff were very pleasant and helpful. Our coach party was all kept together for meals which made it enjoyable. Would recommend this hotel. Another enjoyable experience were the gardens where you could sit and enjoy a drink or two. Roof garden excellent for after dinner drinks and also for sunbathing during the day complete with pool. Also very good for photos.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side very quiet.

We stayed in the hotel for three nights on a visit to Lake Maggiore. We had a room that was quite large overlooking the lake. The decor of the room was a little dated but tasteful. There was also a small veranda where we could sit and relax after a day of touring. The breakfast, included in our tariff was excellent with a wide variety of fresh fruit, cereals and hot and cold food. We had a delightful lunch when we arrived at the roof top bar and cafe. Any staff with whom we had contact was very pleasant and willing to assist in any way possible. The hotel is situated an easy, flat walk to the town center and I would recommend a stay to anyone visiting the area

Room Tip: Pay extra to have a room with a lake view

We stayed at the La Palma in early August everything was as we expected and more besides. Our room was beautifully decorated and had a great side view of the islands. We had booked half board and the food was excellent what was nice was to see the hotel owner and staff eating in there and paying attention to what was going on. The skybar was amazing just lovely sitting with a cold glass of wine watching the sun setting on the gorgeous lake.

We had previously stayed in stresa at a hotel nearby and this was far better, mainly due to the spectator roofttop bar and pool. The hotel is a little dated, rooms are clean and comfortable, but there is no free wifi in the rooms/hotel. Location is prefect - Across the road is the lake, 5 minute easy walk into town.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

The view of the lake from our room was lovely. The staff at reception were very friendly and helpful and the roof top bar is great too. However, the room itself was a little dated in décor as one of the wall sconces was falling off the wall and large stains graced the carpet, but the worse thing about the room was the adjoining room door had no sound proofing at all and the couple in the next room spoke so loudly that you could hear every word. We stayed at La Palma for two nights and this couple disturbed both nights sleep with their thoughtlessness waking us in the middle of the night with their loud voices. I guess they never heard about using their indoor voices.

The restaurant was a disappointment both in service and especially the food. The food was prepared like a mass production for an institution like a hospital. Everything was plated and left under a cover too long. The duchess potatoes were hard and the swiss chard ‘pudding’ bland but the biggest crime was the pork tenderloin. It was tough, I kid you not, how anyone can make a cut of tenderloin tough is beyond me.

They had a lovely cheese trolley, however our waiter made no effort to enlighten us on the different varieties available and I wished we were in the other section where I noticed the waitress was more engaged and forthcoming with her table describing the varieties of cheese available. Do yourself a favour and do not eat at this restaurant, it’s not worth it.

The location of the hotel was great but I was surprised about their high Trip Advisor rating with such a shabby room and awful restaurant.
