“elegant and comfortable hotel, pity about the food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

Stayed at the Astoria for a week at the beginning of July. Position is excellent, being only 5 minutes' walk from the town centre and ferry landing. The public areas are beautifully decorated and immaculately maintained and our room (5th floor on the 'corner' of the building) was spacious, comfortable and very clean. We paid extra for a lake view and it was worth it to watch the sunset from our little balcony. The only disappointment was the food, in particular the evening meal, which was not up to the standard, in terms of variety and presentation, that we had expected form a 4* hotel. The main courses were bland in both flavour and colour and did not take full advantage of the fabulous ingredients that Italy has to offer. We were with a group on half-board basis, but if we were visiting again, we'd choose to have B&B and eat out in Stresa town.

Room Tip: Being on the corner shielded us from the worst of the traffic noise at the front of the hotel and th...

Been there 5 years ago. I wasn't really keen on visiting Italy, but the hotel made me turn over. The rooms are very clean, nice and the service is very good. It has been one of my best experiences with a hotel ive ever had.

Room Tip: I think you will always get a good room here.

The Astoria is one of several large resort hotels lining Lake Maggiore with large lawns and verandahs. Many of the rooms have lakeside views. We stayed in the Annex with a view of the pool at a lower rate. The rooms in the Annex were fine, nicely furnished with lots of marble and quite comfortable. The hotel reminds one of a British seaside resort with lots of comfortable sitting rooms and rather formal breakfast room. The staff were excellent. The hotel is in the middle of the lakefront complex and a short distance from the center of the pedestrian friendly town and the congress center. It is a short downhill walk from the small railroad station.

Room Tip: The Annex does not have a lake view but is cheaper.

Perfect position facing Lake Maggiore, two minutes from a lovely town and the ferry port with magnificent views of the lake and Isola Bella, Hotel Astoria is very clean with a nice bar and pool area. Beware of the sudden drop between the shallow and deep end of the pool!! The staff are friendly although the quality of the meals could be improved. The room was small but adequate, very clean with linen and towels changed regularly, the view from the balcony was more than impressive, just magnifico! Stresa is an ideal town within easy reach of local islands on the lake. We especially loved Fisherman's Island. There is a cable car, ferry to Locarno, Switzerland, lovely lakeside villages, lots of cafés, bars and restaurants. It's the base for a really lovely holiday.

Room Tip: Lake view worth the extra

Just spent a week at this hotel. Very nice hotel with friendly staff. Quality of food very good overall. Very close to town centre. Friendliness of staff seems to rub off onto guests, as everybody seems very happy and friendly. Probably best suited to couples. Highly recommended.

My wife and I stayed here for 8nights in July and thoroughly enjoyed the break. The hotel is well located in Stresa with easy access for the ferry, the towns many restaurants and it has great views across the Lake. The hotel is clean and the staff are welcoming and helpful but I struggle with the 4x rating. The bathroom is a tight fit and in need of a little attention in places. breakfast included in the price was what one would expect for a continental buffet breakfast, however the fruit was tinned rather than fresh! On the one occasion when we had dinner in the restaurant the food was excellent, well presented and varied, if a little expensive. Free wifi was included in the price but access was intermittent and slow with only one devise being able to connect per room at a time. We were surprised that the neighbouring 4star hotels had live entertainment whilst the astoria didn't offer anything during our stay. The underground car park is useful as the rear car park is small and the rear garden pool offers a quiet sun trap away from the main road In front of the hotel.

Room Tip: You need a lakeside room the views are excellent

ROOM: - Pretty hotel with lovely gardens. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room overlooking the lake was not very big and storage was limited to a wardrobe with shelves and four extremely small drawers. However after requesting more hangers (no problem and delivered promptly along with two more pillows) we solved the problem. We hwad a lovely large balcony that was shaded all day (we were happy with that). The bathroom and facilities were fine with constant hot water. Towels and bed linen spotless and changed regularly. TV in the room had bbc channels so we could check on the weather back home! Free WIFI and safe in the room. Only thing missing was tea and coffee.
LOCATION: - Superb. Close to the town centre, ferries and station. With fantastic views.
FOOD: - Basic breakfast. Continental plus bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs. Didn't look too appetising but only tried the scrambled egg. Would bring a boiled egg if requested. Evening meals served at the table which made a pleasant change from the usual buffet (one buffet on the Sunday evening which was lovely). Not overly large portions but four courses and plenty for us. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our dinners. Had several lunches by the pool. Simple but lovely and washed down with a cold white wine, very enjoyable and reasonable prices.
FACILITIES: - Pool, small but heated so lovely and warm. Not a very large area but pretty and very clean. No problem with chairs and shades because the hotel caters for touring holidays so most of the guests are out all day. Service from the pool side bar was no trouble for the very helpful staff.
Only disappointment was that the gym and jacuzzi were not available - not sure why. ?.
Spent several evenings in the hotel bar where once again the staff were great; chatty and friendly, nothing too much trouble.
Overall a brilliant holiday.

Room Tip: If you want a sunny balcony a front room overlooking the lake is not for you. Rooms overlooking the...
