“Just spent one week in this hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2014

We booked our holiday with Riviera Travel. We were pleased when we found out that the evening meal could be taken at any time between 7 and 9 pm. This was good as two of our trips out returned late so we didn't have to rush to get ready for it. At the Bristol we heard they only had the one seating time. The evening meals were very good and always came hot. The hotel was beautifully furnished and decorated with fresh flowers everywhere. The staff were very friendly and the service was great. It was served at your table in the evenings, buffet breakfast from 7am till 10am. The only HOT food for breakfast came in the form of scrambled eggs, streaky smoked bacon and sausage, the same every day. No variation on this.

In the evenings we didn't get to sit in the front part of the restaurant very often as we were told it was not possible even though there were plenty of tables still unoccupied. We can only assume that individual travellers probably paying more had priority over group bookings.

We had a room on the back of the hotel overlooking the small pool which was very pleasant and warm. We never saw any problems with people getting a sunbed as people were out on trips every day. We never heard any noise during the night at all, but we did keep our doors shut so the air conditioning would stay on. We were on 2nd floor and had quite a big balcony and bathroom. We noticed all the balconies at the back on that floor had good sized balconies. The sun was on it all afternoon and for 3 days we didn't use it as it was just too hot. The view over the lake was just lovely and the small town of Stresa was lovely too. Great week overall, although tiring with trips out every day bar one. Lovely hotel and would book it again if we go back.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rear rooms have larger balconies with more sunshine. If the view is more important book a...

a riviera holiday to this hotel is truly a mixed experience, being next to the Regina Palace full of old world charm, it sits facing the promenade, a concrete block of narrow windows, which is why the rooms are narrow! we did manage to move to a larger room with a large balcony,a great improvement.everything was very clean, with clean towels every day.however being riviera we had to eat together at the rear of the lovely dining room,at the same time, some had to eat in a passage to the dining room set up for meals!the menu had less choice than others with other companies, that said the meals were good, well cooked and well presented served at all times by an exemplary staff. the benefit of riviera is the value for money with so many excellent excursions included in the initial cost, so the hotel is only really three star when compared to the regina or the bristol but is none the worse for that, it is all run in a professional manner, remember lakes at are their best with good weather!! it can make or break the overall enjoyment, also thank you to the manager franco for being so helpful.

Room Tip: rooms to the front face the main road and are noisy, especially every morning when the road cleaners...

We had 10 night stay half-board in June 14. Our room was lake view, 5th floor with lovely balcony. Room was good size with an entry area where luggage could be stored. Beds enormous and comfy with regular linen change (pillow cases every day as it was hot weather). Only gripe was that the shower head was on side wall over bath so no room to manoeuvre. All rooms kept spotlessly clean. Air conditioning worked fairly well in hot temperatures.
Staff were very friendly, particularly waiters who were smartly turned out and very efficient. Family run hotel felt very friendly but we hardly had to contact anyone from picking-up our key to checkout.
Food was menu choice for dinner and well prepared and served at table. Some pasta choices but ingredients were English enough for us.
Swimming pool was smallish and situated in garden at the back but not particularly attractive. Terrace and lawn at the front with flowers everywhere. Balconies each had 2 arrangements and looked attractive. There was a road between hotel and lake then a lovely wide promenade. Never heard much traffic noise when balcony doors were shut. Hotel 5 minutes from ferry terminal and 10 mins to Stresa main square where there was choice of cafes, shops etc.
There was a cable car to Mount Mattarone a short walk north from Stresa, worth the ride for the views. We visited the 2 islands closest to Stresa, Isola Bella having the gardens and palace.
We were lucky weatherwise with very hot temperatures and lots of sunshine. You couldn't fail to be relaxed with the setting and views from this area.

Room Tip: Must have lake view and balcony.

The Astoria looks very nice, and the reception staff were helpful and friendly. Our room was fine, if smaller than is usual for an Italian hotel. The big disappointment was the food. There was no antipasta, no salad bar (in Italy, in June, with the abundance of fresh produce in the shops) and a very limited menu. A choice of three first courses, two of them soup. Three choices for the second course, 2 meat and 1 fish, so I don't know what any vegetarians were supposed to eat. And a choice of 2 desserts. My first night there I ordered fish. My first forkful was cold so I tried some from the middle. That was even colder, it was raw. The service was very slow, and every night there was just one kind of vegetable served.

Stayed in a rear facing room for a week in June. The room was large with a massive balcony. The room was clean and comfortable and beds and towels changed regularly. Every one of the staff was friendly and polite. The restaurant is very well managed and meals are served to you at the table by excellent waiters. Always plenty of choice and the food was unfailingly enjoyable with an excellent gala buffet on Sunday. The array of sweets at the buffet was unbelievable. We really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: 418 was an excellent rear facing room with a very spacious balcony.

A wonderful hotel full of old world charm meals were all freshly prepared with good local ingredients. We just love this hotel and the lake is such a beautiful setting. The local islands are well worth a separate trip or trips

This was our fourth trip to the Astoria and I hope to make a fifth next year.
The location is one of the very best in a very beautiful resort. The staff are excellent.
For those not used to Stresa I would point out that the local bus service is convenient and inexpensive.. There is a very good service to Lake Orta which does seem to run on time whilst the bus to Arona or Intra is rarely on time, but they do turn up eventually. You pay in cash on the bus. 7 Euro return from Stresa to Orta over the slopes of the Mottarone is excellent value.

Room Tip: The lake view rooms are great but the same view is available from the public seating areas.
