“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2014

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at Lake Maggiore, we stayed at the Astoria Hotel in Stresa. Having visited other Italian lakes, this holiday truly surpassed both of our previous stays in Garda and Como, as Maggiore is far prettier than others. Having read some reviews of the Astoria Hotel, we were a little concerned in our choice. However we need not have worried. The hotel has been decorated with great thought and all the public rooms are very clean and welcoming. We opted for a superior room with a view of the lake, the bed was very comfortable and the room exceptionally clean, with a great view of the Islands. Food seems to be a bone of contention with some reviewers but we have to say we found no problems at all. Breakfast is as expected, continental style and there is a more than adequate choice, sometimes the fruit is tinned but that is the case in a lot of Italian hotels. Four or five choices of meat and cheese, plus juices, yoghurt, rolls, croissant or toast, is surely enough for most people. The evening meal we found totally acceptable and well cooked, with a choice of 6 starters, at least 5 mains, followed by cheese and dessert of the day or fruit basket. If you did not want the dessert of the day you were always offered either ice cream or another choice. The Grand Buffet on Sunday evening was excellent. All of the staff were polite, attentive and friendly and did all they could to make you feel welcome and valued. We look forward to returning to Stresa in the future and would definately stay at the Astoria again. In fact there we saw one or two couples who have been visiting the hotel for years and they were greeted with great warmth by the staff, we saw this as a testament to a hotel who obviously value their clients.

Room Tip: It is worth paying the supplement for a superior room.

Hotel was very nice the staff were also very pleasant, the room was big and had fantastic views over the lake food was lovely and enjoyed the swimming pool which wasn't busy and crowded.
I would say that it caters more for the older generation.

Room Tip: rooms at the front of the hotel have fantastic views over the lake

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Astoria as the base for our Riviera Travel holiday. Rooms very clean, bed very comfortable. Food - breakfast selection very good, evening meal varied and enjoyable. On Sunday evening we had a Gala dinner which was excellent - all the hotel staff were very attentive and professional. The hotel location is spot on being literally 2 minutes from Lake Maggiorre, The town centre of Stresa is a five minute walk away, have no hesitation in recommending.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the swimming pool which was very pleasant - the electric window roller cur...

The foyer is lovely as we're the check in staff. Two lifts to take you to your room. Room had a huge bed and an acceptable balcony. Bathroom had lots of towels. The balcony had a role down shutter to help keep out both the sun and noise.
The view is simply breathtaking. None of the pictures do it justice.
The swimming pool is pretty, shaded from the wind and warm.
Then we get to the food. Awful! We told them before we booked that one of us was a vegetarian and we were assured that there was plenty of choice of veggie food. So, first night's dinner and what are we offered? An omelette. There isn't even a salad buffet. We had booked with Riviera Travel and so did not get the full menu. After we complained about the omelette option my partner was then offered the veggie section of the full menu. This amounted to two pasta meals( he tried both, both almost tasteless), or a few side salads. The bar was the most expensive we tried on the whole week.

So, book to stay here on a B and B basis and you should be fine. The town has lots of high quality places to eat. We had dinner in two( reviews to follow) and loved everything we had.

Room Tip: Worth paying the extra for a lake side view.

This was our second stay in this hotel and once again we were not disappointed; the location is perfect, straight on the promenade and a few minutes walk from the center. Despite the interior looks a little bit old-fashioned, the room (take one with a lake view = must!!) was very spacious (2 balconies) and clean; the same with the bathroom...
There is a lovely swimmingpool (we didn't use this year because of the weather), and a free parking... WIFI (free) works quickly....
The staff is really nice and helpfull; we have also eaten twice in the restaurant and the diner was very good...
Maybe one negative point: the breakfast is poor: no fresh juice, the coffee is not really tasty and was served cold the second day and the choice is very limited....
But beside this, I still recommend this hotel...

Room Tip: Take always a room with lake view!!!

Despite a gloomy rainy stay, the staff was great and this old hotel is really kept up. You really feel the vibe of this European property. Its location was perfect for a stroll or old town restaurants or shops as well as the train station and ferry dock.

Room Tip: Super location and most rooms face the beautiful Lago Maggiore. Magical!
