“An art gallery within a grand hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Seriously....you could spend hours just roaming the corridors and looking at artwork, sculptures, etc. The hotel is beautiful, the staff is friendly and the view of Lake Maggiore is stunning. Stresa is wonderful town to explore, assuming you ever make it out of the hotel galleries. Wifi is free in the lobby area. Get a code from the concierge desk.

Room Tip: If possible, get an upper floor on the lake side or the back side down near the gardens. We stayed...

We arrived here having stayed at the very good Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como. Sadly in many ways Iles Borromees did not compare favourably.
Pluses.
Great location on the edge of Stresa but an easy walk to all the restaurants, boats, cable car etc
Wonderful views across lake.
Grand interiors, with antiques, chandeliers etc
Attractive gardens
Lake view junior suite had lovely balcony large enough for us both to sit on. Quiet air conditioning in the room
Reasonable gym ( rather hot....)
Dinner experience on terrace was good. Food was good (not 5 star) with plenty of choice. The waiters were attentive.
Breakfast SOME mornings was very nice, taken outside with plenty of choice on the buffet.

Minuses
Breakfast one morning was appalling. Having stayed in many 5 star hotels I have never before not been able to find a table at breakfast nor found the buffet devoid of food (at 8.30am). The excuse was the hotel was full and 2 large groups arrived for breakfast at the same time. However a good hotel would be prepared for this, would manage the situation better, to ensure individual guests were not inconvenienced.

Service whilst reasonably efficient was again not 5 star. None of the staff seemed to remember any of the guests ( at Tremezzo we were always greeted by name.) The Concierge made dinner arrangements for us but had no interest afterwards in hearing how we got on.

The beds are extremely hard.

Pool service was poor. Asking for towels and drinks definitely inconvenienced the pool attendant who spent the whole afternoon on his phone. The pool itself is in need of refurbishment.

We reported that our spa bath was not working and after 5 nights it still had not been fixed. The hair dryer was poor.

Finally all the little touches one expects in a 5 star hotel were lacking eg free mineral water, nighttime treats on pillow, good quality toiletries etc

To have to pay for Wifi in a 5 star hotel is poor. Hide the costs in the room rate rather than charge!.

Overall I had expected great things from this hotel but the hotel experience did not do justice to the surroundings.

Delightfully grand hotel in a beautiful garden and lakeside setting.
Staff are efficient and professional but a few could work on warmer friendliness.
Pool area a little tired and could do with upgrading and free wifi a must at such rates. Our lakefront double room which had glorious views from its balcony was smaller than depicted in the photos but typical for Europe.
A nice surprise was the lovely art works and ceramics on each floors' corridor. Worth looking at.

A real palace on the shores of lago maggiore. The hotel is beautiful architectural and my room was very nicely decorated. For sure this is a jewel of old architecture here in the north of italy. Prices were fine, comparis able to other five star hotels. Definitley will be back!

Hotel is the epitome of 'old world luxury' - excellent service & friendly helpful staff. Excellent buffet breakfast & fine dining in the evening. Very accomodating to our requirements.
Shame that the wifi wasn't free but you can't have everything!

Just returned from a week on Lake Maggiore.

Hotel Des Iles Borromees was really lovely and the staff were simply marvellous. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone most helpful.

Breakfast was fantastic and we especially loved the cheese selection and marvellous assortment of fresh fruits.

This hotel is very ornate and old fashioned Italian in the way it's done out, but really very beautiful.

Bedroom was fine, but considering it was a junior suite....it was sized more like a smallish bedroom. Lovely balcony overlooking Lake Maggiore.

A few caveats; the pool area has lawns which had turned muddy in the grassy areas; not conducive to relaxing sunbathing.

The charge of 7....I repeat SEVEN Euros ( basically £7) for a can of Diet Coke is nothing short of outrageous and consequently we did as everyone else seemed to do.....and stocked up at the local supermarket.

A tiny Salade Nicoise by the pool was £18 and had to be sent back as the potatoes were raw. Not many people took lunch poolside and we could see why. Surely the hotel would do themselves a service by lowering prices and having more guests eating there?

The actual main restaurant at night was fabulous ....food and service were both superb.

Overall, a really lovely holiday but overpriced for what it is.

Room Tip: Be sure and take more Euros with you than originally planned......

Reception 8/10: One of the receptionist (very tall italian man with grey hair) tried to give us the littlest rooms with back view when we'd a reservation for room with balcony with garden view. At the end, we'd got an amazing room with lake view. The receptionists and concierges were polite and nice.
Room 302 - 9/10: amazing view of Isola Bella, clean little room and beautiful, good and firm bed, amazing jacuzzi in the bathroom, too little safe (impossible to put your Ipad and more of your personal stuff) and the balcony is too narrow for two people.
Breakfast 10/10: enough food for every taste: all kind of breads, fruits, jams, juices, meats, eggs, etc.
Hotel 10/10: Grand hotel, beautiful classy building, nice gardens, historical paintings and sculptures.
Swimmingool 7/10: The tiles of the pool need a serious update, the parasols and beds too. The atmosphere is relax and inviting.
Dinner 8/10: Good but we had better dinners and service of the personel in Regina Palace and Lo Stornello restaurant in Stresa.
Bar 10/10: great piano player, barman does for you even drinks that they don't have in the menu and free wifi for 30 minutes.
Personel at breakfast 9/10: the old italian lady is the best and the old gentleman too. The rest are good in exception for the only blond woman with short hair, she needs to learn to said goodmorning back and be friendly when some of the guest ask any question.
Personel at the pool 8/10: pool boy with big dark hair was the best, Marco (the blond guy) is ok but he's too much on the cellphone and he gives better treat to italians and the others have to wait. Fabio, the waiter of the pool bar, was very quick and friendly (even we saw him working after the pool was closed, late in the hotel).
Good for couple and small family.

Room Tip: room with Lake view are amazing, 3rd. floor
