“Fantastic restaurant, basic hotel in great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

The Verbano Hotel is on the Pescatori Island and offers great views of the lake and in particular Isola Bella. However, the rooms are very basic and the bathrooms do not include showers, but just a bath with a hand shower.

However, the views are fantastic and the bonus of waking up hearing the lake rather than a noisy street or tourists is a real special feeling.

Besides the views and location the restaurant is the real special part of the hotel. The food is fantastic and the views are again great. Highly recommended.

The hotel does indeed feel a bit more like a restaurant that also has a hotel and the staff isn't as friendly as you would expect.

We have stayed there twice now and would always come back. However, probably not for more than 1 or 2 nights as there isn't very much to do on the island itself.

Room Tip: take one of the rooms facing isola bella with a balcony.

Don't stay here!
This is a real expensive restaurant with lovely food. By all means eat here, but don't waste your money on a room. The outdoor terrace is used for food service. You can expect lively noise and chatter until midnight on nights that the restaurant is busy. Impossible to get to sleep. If you pay 150 or 200 euro for the room, you can be guaranteed that the fifty or sixty diners chatting outside your window are worth a lot more to them.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 1 and 2 on the first floor and their equivalents on the second floor due to excessive no...

Be warned that Verbano is no hotel. It appears from upon arrival that the restaurant is the main priority for the hotel. The staff ignore you and are really noisy shouting and smashing bottles til 01.00 and starting again at 06.30. The Verbano charge you 5 star prices for 2 star service. The only thing good about verbs no is the view. Would not recommend this hotel but if you do choose the stay here ask for a top floor room or else you will hear everyone walking around upstairs including the using the toilets.

I'd find it very hard to conceive that anybody could find an overnight at The Hotel Verbano not to be a special privilege. To be sure, a professional hotel reviewer will find fault with the hotel - it has its blemishes - but when you've got it, you can get away with things that others may trip over. The Hotel Verbano is not a modern 21st century luxury hotel - if that's your thing then one of the mainland Stresa goliaths will be more for you - but it has class nonetheless. Things went wrong during our one night stay - absence of hot water on arrival, which was sorted eventually & wifi that never worked - but what the heck, when the location is so beautiful one has to be a masochist to get oneself into a lather over such things.

Room Tip: Dinner at the hotel restaurant is the only real option out-of-season and the fayre is pricey.

We stayed here for 3 nights while visiting Stresa and the surrounding islands on Maggiore at the quiet start of the spring/summer season.

We arrived by rail in Stresa in the early evening in a downpour of rain and made the trip from the station down to the ferry where we got the last ferry across to the island and to the hotel. The island felt empty but the hotel was welcoming.

I'd say that if you were less quick on your feet or were arriving late you would want to check ahead with the hotel to make sure you understand how to get onto the island at the time that you're arriving. The hotel does have a boat but it wasn't entirely clear to us where to find this and whether it operated at this time of year - we never used it and Stresa was deserted in the rain - we had to go into another hotel to ask for directions.

We had a room with a lake view over Isola Madre which made you appreciate what a special treat it is to stay on the island rather than visit it during the daytime. The room was good and clean if perhaps a tiny bit basic - e.g. I'd prefer to see a shower in a hotel room these days than a bath tub.

We dined in the hotel restaurant (I don't think anything else on the island was open at this time of evening on this particular day) and had good food with good service although I'd say that the prices for food seem high compared to other places that we ate while on this trip.

That said, we continued to dine in the hotel for follow on nights because it was easier to return back to the hotel by ferry after a day of touring and then settle down to dinner.

We also ate breakfast in the hotel - this is a fairly basic buffet which I think could perhaps be improved a little as it doesn't compare quite so well with dinner but, again, the setting for breakfast is excellent with views over the lake.

As you'd expect at this time of year the island is heavily dependent on the weather. If it's sunny then it's nice and busy in the daytime and things open up and boats are everywhere. When it was rainy then it was very quiet indeed.

In summary, I'd recommend the Verbano as a very different, charming place to stay "on" the lake - it's got lovely views, the food is good and the staff were friendly and helpful.

What I'd add is that we went from Stresa to Cannobio where we stayed at the Pironi and I'd say that the Pironi had nicer rooms and better breakfast for less cost. We also had equally good food in Cannobio for lower costs.

That's why I'd give the Verbano 4/5 rather than 5/5 this time around but we still enjoyed it a lot.

After a very hot walk-about we were anxious to find a nice shady spot for lunch. The homemade pasta was delicious and satisfying. Great views, good value, and the resident pheasant was an added bonus. Nice spot to enjoy a meal as you're waiting for the ferry.
