Large, plush and very well run hotel offering plenty of comfort and a great location. Slightly impersonal - I felt we stayed here rather than were really treated as guests. But if you're thinking of booking, do so without hesitation.
Reception was a disappointing experience - staff are thoroughly efficient but busy; they lacked warmth and we were processed, not welcomed. Should be very much better for a hotel like this and it was a poor start and finish to a stay. That said, many of the other staff around the hotel were very friendly and it was noticeable how hard everyone was working to keep things nice and make things work smoothly.
The general facilities are excellent and although the glitz of the public areas is a bit brash, the place looks like a grand hotel even if it doesn't quite have that atmosphere of a bygone era.
We had an inland facing bedroom which was fine - very good size, balcony, effective aircon, electrically operated roller shutters outside, spotlessly clean, a comfortable bed and more than enough storage space. TV had masses of channels but the screen was small, especially to view from the bed. Bathroom was great - large bath, separate shower cubicle, WC and bidet, also immaculately clean.
Couple of oddities for a hotel of this standard - the bathroom just had a matchbox-sized carton of two or three tissues, rather than a proper box, and a bottle of body lotion would have been a nice touch. As would a vase with a flower or two to welcome you, or even a "free" bottle of mineral water on the table, rather than an expensive one in the minibar. Maybe the better rooms get this?
But anyway, one doesn't come to the Dino to stay in the room - or at least you shouldn't. The lake is fantastic and the hotel grounds are large and beautifully maintained. Massive garden with well-kept lawns where even in August there were always sun loungers and parasols aplenty. Staff went round constantly to clear away used sun towels and there were always new ones by the pools. Indoor pool is huge, a fabulous asset and kept at near body temperature. Outdoor pool was somewhat cooler but equally large, so plenty of room for everyone. And then there's the lake - a short walk down a ramp to a long strip of pebbly beach. Brilliant for a swim and several friendly ducks as company too.
Others have commented on the extra charges for parking, internet, sauna, and so on. Yes indeed. But I guess it keeps the basic room rates lower.
Baveno is a nice little town - a large village really - and there are several perfectly adequate restaurants within a couple of hundred metres, plus gelateria and pizzeria. Supermarket five minutes from the hotel, ferries a minute's walk away, and the post office across the road.
Overall - a great place to stay.
