We were two couples and stayed at this hotel for the last two weeks of September. The vast majority of visitors to this hotel were either English or German with a few Italians. Being towards the end of the season the hotel was reasonably quiet.
Our room (111) was on the first floor and these appeared larger than others on the ground and second floors as they had room for a sofa. The bathroom was small and the shower floor was slippery and the shower unit was overdue for replacement. Water was hot at all times. Hair dryer was ok. Towels replaced as required. Toiletries replaced as they are used. Floors were mopped and hoovered each day and bedroom was kept spotless by the excellent maid. Balcony overlooked garden area so nothing special. Aircon was very effective and easy to operate.
Safety deposit box is small but sufficient for money, passports etc. €30 returnable deposit payed for safe key - simply to ensure that it is returned. Plenty of room in minibar for your liquids etc. Bring your own travel kettle and provisions as none supplied in room.
We were on half board and food was generally very good with plenty of choice for even the fussiest and if there really was nothing to your liking they will endeavour to find an alternative. The salad bar is extensive so restrain yourself or you could struggle through the remaining courses. Soups are good, pastas have delicious sauces, there is always a fish main and a good variety of puddings with excellent Apple Strudel and fresh fruit salad. The staff in the restaurant were particularly friendly and attentive and appeared to genuinely wanted to please. The Maitre d' and Fernando (not his real name as he is from Sri Lanka) were particularly attentive. The included wine and bottled water is a significant saving and the wines were very palatable.
Breakfast is an all-buffet affair. There is the usual extensive continental selection plus hot options. There are always hot hard boiled eggs but also either fried or scrambled eggs and a choice of two other items; a couple of types of sausage, beans, tomato or sliced mushroom with a hint of garlic. Coffee came out of machines but was still very good. A varied choice of teabags. Juices were generally Pineapple or Ace juice (very tasty) and orange was only available once. Sadly, Fruit in the morning was tinned although occasionally there was also fresh pineapple or melon. The breads were outstanding. We allowed an hour for breakfast as there was plenty to fill you up for the days activities. We noted that in Italy the waiters whipped your plate away as soon as you had finished irrespective of whether your companions were still eating.
The walk to Sirmione takes at least 30 minutes and 40 minutes at a gentle pace. The shuttle bus only takes 8 passengers at a time but will return in about 10 minutes if full. The drivers are very obliging. Yes, it would be better if it ran more often but there is a limit to how often it is practical to run. You can always catch a bus which is very cheap. Use the bus to go to Desenzano or Pischeira rather than the ferry as these destinations are easier by bus and very cheap. Get your bus tickets from the tobacconist in Colombare. We used the hotel bicycles to cycle to Desenzano which is an easy, flat ride. We left mid morning and returned mid afternoon and expected to pay for a full day but were only charged for half a day. It costs €4 for half a day and €6 for a full day. There is a proper cycle track all the way to Pischeira but is a little hilly whereas to Desanzano we used the pavement. Cycling to Sirmione requires you to use the road for most of the way due to the number of pedestrians but traffic is slow and gave us a wide berth. No safety helmets are supplied.
The pool area is very pleasant and we had no problems getting sunbeds but at the height of the season I think that sunbeds will be at a premium. The swimming towels will be found in your room and when you want them replaced you leave them downstairs in the pool are to be laundered and the maid will replace them in your room.
The bar and reception areas are quite small and could become full during our stay, especially on the evening (once per week) when we had a singer. Again, during busy periods I do not think that there would be enough room for everyone.
Some of the staff at reception were a bit 'hard faced' but in general all the staff at the Du Parc were friendly, polite, helpful and attentive and I got the impression that they were generally a happy team who genuinely cared about their clients.
