Stayed at the Grand Hotel Terme in April 2004 and are returning May 2005.
Hotel is a good standard and very clean although was not taken by the restaurant. Service was slow in the evenings (and pretty sparsely populated indicating most ate out in the evenings) and breakfast was disappointing (but certainly not bad). Considering this is not a cheap hotel more could be done here. This time we are going B and B only.
GHT is very clean and position is great, so close to the town. The rooms are a good size but worth paying for a lake view.
All in all a good hotel with a few minor irritations.

Fabulous position next to the old town(1 min walk).
Right on the lake for swimming and great views.
Food excellent in a lovely setting(try to eat outside).
Nice pool and terraces.
Natural sulphur spa, so on the odd occassion you could get the sulphur smell in the grounds but it should not spoil your stay.
High quality Spa.
My room was a little old fashioned. Try for a lake view I think they are better.

We have just returned from a week in the Grand Hotel Terme and as reasonably frequent visitors to Italy, found this Hotel to be the most disappointing yet. Although rated as a 5 star, we found nothing to justify this rating. The room was small, basic and not very attractive and the bathroom was absolutely tiny - in fairness it was very clean and well maintained, however this is the very least that one can expect from any decent hotel.
The public areas around reception and the bar area are quite clinical and totally lacking in the charm normally found in better Italian hotels.
The food was good (we stayed on a half board basis) although the breakfast was quite limited. Unfortunately, the service in the dining room was very inconsistent, to such an extent that on 1 occasion we simply gave up and left, and on our last evening we didn't even bother with dinner.
The staff are, almost invariably, very pleasant and helpful.
However, in a country that has so many lovely hotels to offer, we would quite simply not stay in the Grand Terme again
