“Amazing view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

We spent 3 nights in this hotel in May 2013
Book this hotel only if you would like to have an amazing view of the lake. In my opinion it´s a bit overpriced.

It´s a 10min walk to Varenna.
The rooms are ok but nothing else.
Breakast is ok.
Rooms where quite cold. Not possible to switch on the heater, you have to ask the owner and he was not that helpful

If you stay at this hotel, be sure to get a room with a balcony on the upper level. The view is magnifient. The rooms are plainly furnished. The breakfast was ok but nothing to write home about. This hotel is a bit outside of Varenna and it is a hike to town. It is perhaps more suitable to those who have a car. If you are arriving by train, you can walk to the hotel although it is a bit of a hike but again doable depending on your fitness level. One morning we had no water in our room. First we were told to leave the tap on for 5 minutes and the water would come on. It didn't. The we were informed by the staff that they had a water delivery issue with the town of Perledo. We eventually got water to our room a bit later in the morning. I assume the water situation was an anomlay as no other posters to this site have mentioned it. The elderly desk clerk is totally devoid of warmth but the rest of the staff are very nice and acommodating.

Very romantic, very magical. Great views, would recommend the upper rooms, worth the extra cost. A short (5-10 mins) stroll down to the town, would recommend a taxi from the station unless backpacking and trying to save pennies, in which case the walk is do-able, but from the station it's more like 15-20 mins.

The continental buffet breakfast is nothing special, but nothing to complain about. Dinner isn't great, but the views are sensational, and to just sit there drinking cheap italian wine with the sound of the cicadas and a light breeze blowing off the lake is lovely.

I proposed to my wife down in the town one evening, and walking back to one of the upper rooms, we stopped off in their little chapel and said a prayer of thanks. Was really special, and I don't know of many other hotels that have a chapel.

Service was fine, the management team are a bit like an eccentric Italian family. All very friendly and helpful. There was a power failure one evening which cut out the AC, but when we notified them of it in the morning they fixed it promptly.

Rooms are basic, but perfectly adequate for a stay and clean.

Room Tip: Any room/suite on the upper floors is spectacular, as far as I can tell.

A Rick Steves recommendation. Yes, it's out of town a bit, but we consider that a plus (we Americans could use a good walk now and then - about 7-10 minutes). Ck-in is in the cafe; some rooms are in the pinkish building next to and below the cafe, but ours (and we feel the best) are high up the mountainside in an old monastery with unbelievabe views of Lake Como, right where the three prongs of it intersect. These upper rooms are accessed by two fun funiculars. The rooms themselves are spotlessly clean and comfortable, nothing luxurious - you're here for the view and the quiet.

Breakfasts are good and filling - lots of choices; excellent cappucino machine. We had two very nice dinners at the on-site cafe; nothing really special, and there are many excellent choices in town, and again, the walk into and from town is a nice way to earn, then work off that big dinner!

Eremo Gaudio feels like a family-run place, and the staff speak good English and are very helpful and anxious to please and answer any questions about anything (such as how and when to validate a train ticket). Don't miss the short hike down to Fiumelatte, a roaring cascade in a mini-canyon. Overall an excellent choice for those who love serenity, views, and being away from crowds (and don't mind a little walking).

Room Tip: ask for upper-floor, best lake-view in upper building; although all rooms have some view.

A wonderful hotel with a great cafe/restaurant serving traditional homemade pasta dishes. The view across lake Como is amazing. This hotel has a very unique feature, a series of outdoor 'funicular' style glass elevators. These take you up the cliff to the various floors where the rooms are located. There are communal balconies on each level and some rooms have private balconies. This hotel is about 10 minutes walk into the main town and is all up hill on the way back but well worth it for the views.

Room Tip: Higher rooms give you a great view although the lake is over looked even from the lobby!

We stayed at Eremo Gaudio for two nights during a stay in Varenna. We loved the views from above, but it just didn't compare to staying in town and being within a short walking distance from everything. While this hotel was a 10-15 minute walk to town, keep in mind its quite an uphill walk back (especially when you're pushing a stroller).

This hotel has two buildings. The lower building has the restaurant, the front desk and a number of rooms. The upper building is much more charming -- and you get to ride a funicular to get there -- and has even more spectacular views of Varenna. In all honesty, the lower building seemed like more of a motel, than a charming place to stay in Varenna.

I actually ended up booking this hotel because the one I really wanted was completely booked, but I have to say it ended up working out ok. Pros: the price was very reasonable, specially considering the view we had from our balcony... STUNNING!!! The lake and the views of the Swiss and Italian mountain range was just perfect. The staff was very nice and kind, the room was also very clean and a decent size. Also, they have this really neat lift that takes you up to the tall portion of the hotel and that has magnificent views of the entire town and the surrounding area. Awesome picture spot.

Cons: The location was a little out of the center of Varenna and you do have a hike to do, stairs included, every time you want to come down into the town. The rooms and the hotel itself are a bit on the outdated side, but then again everything else in these towns is so I was ready to not be in a newly renovated modern place. Also, during our stay the the hotel was experiencing some water problems, so we had no hot water for a while.
