“Lovely, excentric hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

On a tour of the lake, focused mainly on Bellagio, we stayed in this historic property with an exceptional garden and spectacular views (which we enjoyed from our two "double rooms for single use"). The hotel lies right next to the Villa Monastero with even more beautiful gardens, which can be visited at a modest price. Varenna is quiet (although accessible by train from Milan, Lecco and St Moritz), a bit sleepy, but charming. A cdreative, modestly-priced and pleasant dinner was served on the terrace overlooking the gardens and Bellagio in the distance across the lake. More stimulating than most such hotel fare. Breakfast was basic but adequate, in a distant room with an agreeable terrace of its own. Room decor (at least ours) was very basic. Beds are hard, although to us acceptable. The views and garden are the thing. Why eccentric? The hotel lists a 10:30 AM check-out time, and sticks to it. This seems abusive, but mostly unnecessary. And it comes across as unfriendly and arbitrary. A re-think of this noxious practice is in order.

Room Tip: Lake views a must in this hotel.

I may be biased with this review, that's okay though, because we literally had the PERFECT wedding reception at Hotel Villa Cipressi. PERFECT. The stay was also really nice, as well!

Wedding Reception:
I worked with a coordinator (Sabina Domenici from ForeverAmore Weddings - she's AMAZING!!!) to coordinate all the details for my big day. We got married at San Giorgio church and had the reception at Cipressi. Whenever I wanted to reach out to Cipressi myself, the manager Davide, was always so gracious and accommodating.

Because my husband and I live in Seattle, WA, we couldn't make it out to Cipressi before the wedding, so our coordinator worked with the manager and he gave us a tasting of our selected dinner menu the day before. The weather had cleared up, so we got to enjoy the wonderful food outside in their gardens.

We were hoping to have an outdoor reception under the pergola in their gardens, but this Spring was "the coldest Spring in a century" in Italy, so we had to change our reception to indoors the day before. This didn't seem to be an issue, at least not that I was made aware. The indoor room is waaay more beautiful in person than in pictures. And it worked out really well because we offered an apertif hour (like a cocktail hour) before dinner and after the ceremony. The buffet selection was presented in the room right outside the dinner room, but is open to the balcony. So when the sun came out, everyone got to enjoy the gardens, some DELICIOUS appetizers, and drinks on the balconies and in the gardens. It was perfect. During the cocktail hour, we were allowed to have a guitarist/vocalist perform, so it gave people the chance to dance a little bit before dinner. We also had our first dances right after the appetizers were finished being served. It worked out really well!

Dinner was served in the dinner 'hall' (not sure what to call it) and it literally to-die-for-good! Food was such a big criteria for me and my husband for our wedding. We've been to SO many weddings with mediocre food and we're self-proclaimed foodies, that we just knew we had to pick a venue with good quality, delicious food. And Cipressi did not disappoint! Seriously, even if you don't host your wedding here, have dinner here. It's freakin' amazing! I wish we would've eaten there on another occasion during our week-long stay! Yum, yum yummm!! :) The best part was probably the most delicious fresh strawberry Italian wedding cake that was our dessert. Luckily, I remembered to ask that some be saved for my and my husband to enjoy on our honeymoon. :)

I never felt rushed to leave the venue at the end of the night. We knew we had the venue until 11pm, so we had already planned for everyone to go to Pub L'orso. So it wasn't a big deal at all.

Rooms:
We stayed in Manzoni honeymoon suite and because it was situated on the corner, it had wonderful views of Villa Monestero. The room photographed beautifully the morning of the wedding while I was getting ready. This room isn't separated from the main hotel, but we never felt crowded or even that we were by anyone else. It was pricey, but it was for our wedding, so well worth it! :)

One complaint, was that the night before the wedding we booked a double bed room for my husband to stay in and added another bed so his two groomsmen could stay with him the night before. This small room on the other side of the hotel ended up costing only 20 euros less than the Manzoni suite. So, had we known, we would've booked another suite for the guys because it was a small, cramped room!

WIFI strength wasn't the best, but you're on Lake Como, do you REALLY need internet? :)

Cipressi surpassed all of our expectations in terms of food, customer service, the Manzoni suite quality, and views. It was so perfect. :)

Tips for management: add A/C and room service options! then you'll really be the perfect hotel!

Room Tip: * If you're going to stay here, go for a suite, it's so romantic and lovely! * Definitely...

I spent three nights with my family in August 2013 in this hotel and I wish I could give it more stars, but my review here focuses only on the hotel per se.
Position is ideal on the lake Como, since Varenna has ferryboats to all other small cities on the lake. The building is beautiful, a restored villa with green gardens to visit and enjoy. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
The rooms were average for European size, but the furniture and beds were very simple. Air conditioning was barely working but we could not touch the controls, so it was always on and still we needed 3 fans to create enough cool air (it was the hottest days of the year...). I was able to see another single room which had no A/C and was quite noisy.
The bathroom was in need of a significant update, with mold on the curtains of a small shower.
On the good side, breakfast was limited but all items were tasty, and the restaurant was really excellent.
The hotel is a three stars, so it delivers what it promises, but for the beauty of the building and the class of the restaurant (not to mention the relatively steep prices), I would have expected a little more.

Room Tip: If you travel by car, the parking lot 30 yards before the hotel is a great place to keep your car si...

The day we arrived temperatures were near 100 degrees. When we opened the door, the hotel room was already hot and sticky. The air conditioner unit stated that one must call the front desk to either adjust the room temperature or turn the unit on. Upon placing a call to the front desk asking for someone to turn the unit on, I was told the air conditioning unit was broke and would be fixed the next day. Why such material fact was not conveyed to us by the front desk clerk upon our arrival speaks volumes about this hotel. That night we all sweltered in the room and attempted to sleep. The opened lake side window provided no relief as the was little breeze and the temperature stayed in the 80's for most of the night. The hotel made no billing adjustment for such major inconvenience nor did it even offer something as simple as a bottle or two of water. Moreover, when the unit was repaired the following day, it was placed on a timer by the staff. As a result, the room was once again incredibly hot when we returned at the end of the day. Other examples of the hotel's frugality can be demonstrated by the absence of any front desk staff on a couple of occasions, the lack of elevator service between midnight and 7:00 a.m., the fact that the hallway leading to the main elevator had motion sensor to turn a light on but meant you were in complete darkness for a couple of seconds when leaving the elevator and the fact that television remotes were given to you at the front desk ( as opposed to be left in the room) with the caveat that they be hand delivered to the front desk at checkout. While this hotel likes to consider itself as a luxury hotel ( charging 250 euros per night), its staffing levels and Ora ices indicate otherwise. I got a clear sense that it was all about profit with no real concern for it's customers. Will not be going back!

My niece and her partner (now husband!) had their wedding there on the 26th July. Our room was very clean and had an excellent view of Lake Como.
The wedding was terrific. The buffet after the ceremony, and later in the day the seven course evening meal were fantastic. Absolutely marvelous food and all in such a beautiful setting.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 212. No air con but the quiet fan was more than adequate and the daytime temp was aro...

The view from our very large room was spectacular--lake como and the surrounding mountains as well as beautiful gardens. Our room was sparsely furnished but very clean, huge and very comfortable. Also, it was very quiet and we could stroll through the beautiful gardens whenever we wanted to.

Stayed in Villa Cipressi hotel in room Villa Magnolia. There is a beautiful well-groomed garden in hotel where like to provide weddings local population therefore the restaurant of hotel is often closed. Hotel staff very useful.

Room Villa Magnolia is rather big - about 40 m or more. The big and well equipped bathroom. Huge balcony with a smart view of the lake. Sitting on this balcony you feel as the owner of own private villa. Such impression that this small lodge served earlier as an arbor at Villa Cipressi. In room it is necessary to replace windows which are badly closed therefore even in June at bad weather it was rather cool. But in room to be in a full privacy - there are no neighbors from above and sideways.

The sad impression was left by a breakfast. Very modest. Fried eggs can't be received even for an additional payment. But most of all surprised 3 iron barrels with inscriptions: coffee, hot water, milk. For 360 euros per night it would be desirable to see at least the coffe machine, allowing to receive some types of coffee, and also to have opportunity to receive fried eggs.
